I think many 'Vegan Extremists' (that's how I call) completely forgot their main and original object. Veganism to which I agree is about addressing, reducing and tackling all the consequences of human exploitation on the nature, especially the massive animal consumption. But human body is built to consume at least some (subsidiary amount of) animal product. If one insists 100% goal it is doomed to fail. I think even '20% reduction of animal consumption per a person' can have a very big impact on the whole economy, and thus make a lot of difference on the nature. I keep consuming animal meat, eggs, milk, etc, just in a more controlled manner.

No disrespect, but I think you misinterpret the philosophy of veganism and have misinformation about nutrition. Veganism is solely about animal rights and ending animal exploitation. Your rhetoric suggests that it's vegan to simply reduce your intake of animal products, which is inaccurate. If I think it's unethical to consume animals unnecessarily, why would I compromise and have meat on rare occasions? That being said, I fully support people wanting to reduce their consumption of animal products, but if you're eating a steak once a week, you sure as hell aren't vegan. I haven't had meat, dairy or eggs in seven years.. when exactly am I doomed to fail?

@@JerodWillis-u6b My assumption of 'unevitable doom' is about both health and economic aspects. They should be calculated and examined, so I may be wrong. There are enough evidence that vegitable-originated only nutrition causes many troubles, especially growth failure of children. Even in Mahayana Buddhist temples which have strictly practice vegan lifestyle for centuries, they have some exceptions of consuming animal meat. Economy-wise, when compared to animal raising (especially densely crowded forms), production of same amount of plant protein is not only cost inefficient by large margin, but also even less energy efficient or eco-friendly because of complicated processing and required workloads (and chemicals in most cases) to tender large farming fields. We always need to carefully assess all the tradeoffs, and optimize them. Ideal ratios will differ in each regions and cultures.

@kwj_nekko_6320 What are your sources that vegan diets cause "many troubles" or that they aren't adequate for developing children? I don't really care what Buddhists are doing -- even if their diet is similar, it's a different philosophy. I also have to heavily disagree with you on your economic argument. Animal products are by far less cost effective than plant based foods. Animal agriculture requires more land and water for one. You also have to take into account that crops need to be fed to animals making it exhaust even more resources. Show me where you're getting this information from, please. I would be happy to take a look, but intuitively none of this is adding up. At the very least are you willing to agree that cutting down animal product to "20%" isn't actually the same as vegan?

@JerodWillis-u6b sorry, I majored chemical engineering (including biochemistry) and those thoughts are rather combination of my learnings than a sourced knowledge. I admit that my take on Buddhism and veganism seems very different from yours.

At least shōjin ryōri (Buddhist monks' cuisine) are vegetarian enough (they do contain fish stock though) that it's okay to get it. Unlike me, who has to supplement my trip in Japan with trips to Turkish/Indo-or-Pakistani/Indonesian restaurants, so that I don't go crazy without my spices and meat.
