Hi! TEF and TCF are indeed quite similar and you can take one or the other for Canadian immigration, as they are both valid. They are organized by two different institutions, therefore the dates of exam are different and varies from a place to another. The difficulty is also similar. There are more questions in the TEF, but less subjects for the oral and written comprehension, versus the TCF. In a word, if you are in a hurry and want to maximize your chance to take it quickly, just take the one with available seats and close from your home.
