I totally agree training isn't only establishing dominance especially for intelligent dogs like Kangals. You also have to make sure they are happy aka exercising, playing enough and therefore loving/respecting you. If you close your Kangal to a small place and make them unhappy no amount of dominance can make them behave. They would get more and more aggressive in time and fabricate themselves duties like barking at everything etc. Ash has good balance between dominance and respect i think, well done! But he might be in a little playful side, for example in 3:40, he looks around instead of coming closer right away. He is thinking 'why call me? Is there something?' so he checks around instead of coming closer and possibly getting leashed. Only after he checked every side and made sure nothing was there he came. It could be a problem if there is really something and he might not listen. It would be safer if you teach him a no-nonsense calling method i think, like a whistle. If you blow the whistle he must come and sit next to you otherwise punishment. You can also offer rewards like ham etc something he loves. For punishment you can leash him or force him stay for 5 minutes, he would hate it. But you shouldn't overuse this method only when needed otherwise it would become ordinary way of calling him and he wouldn't always listen again lol.

NEVER EVER grab the back of the legs of a dog and pull them.. Ever heard of hip dysplasia in dogs, especially in large dogs. While pulling the back of the dogs legs in a dog fight can cause your dog to be permanently damaged. Only way to stop a dog fight is to grab their collar and use that to pull your dog away from the situation. If your dog has hold of the other dog, do the same but tighten the collar until the blood circulation of your dog slows down and this will cause your dog to let go...safe and easy. I have tried this method with my Amstaffs and it works a treat.

Kangals aren't aggressive dogs but they naturally adopt 'keeping order' behaviour. They wouldn't like other dogs misbehaving and it is problematic when they are poorly trained and might challenge Kangals. They would never ever back down from a challenge especially fully grown males. Here in Turkey we always cut ears of working male Kangals because it is 100% they will fight and tear them. For female dogs it isn't necessary and you can see if a Kangal is male or female from their ears too. So male Kangals become dominant as they fully grow and you should keep it under check. Especially large males become 'no-nonsense' dogs in time but ofc working and socializing dogs don't have same conditions.

Hey buddy. I know that you care about your dog. But you need to know there is a horrible problem developing with unethical Kangal breeding in the United States. Dogs are being abused, even to the point of Bones being broken, they are being dumped and shelters all over the country. This is happening particularly in areas where people should not be owning these dogs because there is no room for them. I know that you don't mean harm, but you need to seriously consider that you are contributing to the normalization of the idea that these dogs can be off of farms. You are saying things that run counter to hundreds of years of breeding, and you are inadvertently contributing to a bunch of idiots getting these dogs who then are mistreating them and dumping them in shelters. Please trust me I have nearly 20 years of experience with this breed. I know you are not a bad person and I know you are not intending to do this. Your channel is getting a lot of attention and unfortunately is getting attention from the wrong people and normalizing these things.
@ashthekangal2 күн бұрын
@@pixelupdates7041 first off I'm from Canada. Secondly, you should just back off or unsubscribe from the channel. If your not willing to pick up your phone and film your own dogs doing what your advocating for, you have no business trying to discourage others from learning about or simply enjoy watching these dogs. Especially Ash! Many of the subscribers are Turkish with far more understanding and experience of these dogs than you.
@ashthekangal2 күн бұрын
The reason behind my channel is to provide information about my experience with my dog. There is far too many videos that show Kangals dog fighting or on a chain viciously growling at each other. People are getting Kangals based on seeing these videos too. When a person chooses to get a dog they need to know more about them and understand what responsibilities and behaviours are expected. I make it very clear that these dogs are not guard dogs and should not be bought with that purpose in mind. Any breed can be bought by bad dog owners. People should know what to expect from first hand experienced people instead from these fake youtube channels that steal information from people channels and pretend that they know what it is like to live with these dogs. Having a channel from a person like you with a working dog background would greatly improve the source of information that is reaching people about these breeds. We recently had a Turkish subscriber tell us that a working dog kangal does not behave the same way a socialized kangal behaves which is the point that I am trying to show. Kangals are beautiful dogs and need to be owned for the right purpose. I may not have livestock for Ash to protect but he does a good job keeping coyotes, foxes and raccoons, etc out of my yard so I can feel safe letting my kids play outside. Do I have Ash for the purpose of guarding my family from home intruders NO. That isn't a Kangals job. There are fewer and fewer people getting into farming and these dogs will become obsolete if they are not used for other purposes such as protecting chickens, etc on country properties from wild animals.
@ashthekangal2 күн бұрын
It is the fault of the breeder for selling kangal /mixes to the wrong dog owners. Your anger should be pointed towards them. They are largely the contributing factor to Kangals being abused and sent to shelters in the US.

It so interesting how different some of the Kangal and kangal mixes act. My guy (kangal/pyr) came from a working farm that had a petting zoo attached to it. He lived next to a fox enclosure. He is super good with all animals that are not threatening. The squirrels at the dog park don't even run away from him. I trust him to be off leash anywhere and only worry about him knocking down an over exuberant dog lover. He is a social butterfly. I did spend 3 hours a day training him though for the first year and he also did go through that wander off stage for a few months. His wander off phase though was to say hello to friends and people. 😅

@@johnbickle4654 I would not recommend a kangal for this purpose. There are several reasons why I say this. If you are away from home than your partner will need to train and care for the dog. They do not walk on a leash like a regular dog. They are incredibly strong and powerful. My wife is no longer able to walk Ash because she can not handle the power. They need at least 1 to 2 hours of physical activity per day. Otherwise they get bored. When this happens they get into trouble like digging holes, ripping up teddy bears, get into the garbage, etc. Also, you do not want to raise them to be aggressive towards people and most would not be this way anyways. They tried using them in the police and that failed. My boy will warn us if a stranger is on the property with his fierce bark but will not allow anyone to be near him or touch him. He was taken off my property once by a person who either wanted to steal him or hurt him. He was taken as far as 50 ft and refused to go further. This person beat him up badly but he returned home. We know this because of the injuries he got ie swollen face, troubles walking and we were able to follow the tracks in the snow. This experienced changed him forever. Most people are afraid because of their size and bark. They are guardians for protection against coyotes, bears, raccoons, etc. and are very good at this job.

Here I am, I had a female Kangal, unfortunately at the age of 7 she died from a practically fulminating bone tumor. A year after his death, my family and I wanted another experience with an Anatolian Sheepdog and we chose to get a male Kangal Kapar. Since the female we had was easily dominated by me and treated the rest of the family similarly to Ash, they underestimated the male's education by spoiling him too much and letting him take the lead. When you talk about weight in relation to power, tenacity, courage etc you are absolutely right, but let me tell you something, my male kangal is almost 80 kg, 80 kg where he has a very long and extremely powerful body, I am a 1.86 man m for 150 kg. So I can tell you that no one, not even me, can really keep him for a long time, I'll tell you something, this male that I have now loves to bathe in the lake and also move away from the shore by many tens of metres, one day I see him wriggling in the water and then return to shore, had bitten a catfish measuring over 1 m and dragged it to shore even though it was certainly heavier than him. These dogs should be banned from sale without first investigating the family that intends to breed the kangal, no one is really ready for a kangal, not even my family was ready despite having previously raised a female for 7 years. I often call it a "leap of faith", as you say, you can't just walk around in public with a large kangal, a German shepherd who doesn't understand his place in the world and tries to be aggressive would be enough... simply mine kangal will kill him.

@pixelupdates70416 күн бұрын
You're putting this dog in a very non-standard situation for the breed. He should be fenced in properly and be in with livestock. You're trying to get him to do something that hundreds or thousands of years of breeding is not really what he's supposed to be doing. He should be embedded with livestock. Him coming or going has zero to do with respect. It's about what he wants to do, what his instinct tells him to do etcetera. Voice commands and boundaries are certainly very important but you need to have hard physical limitations in place IE proper fencing. You are going to have a lawsuit on your hands if that dog decides he wants to bite someone or someone else's dogs while you're walking him around on property other than your own. People don't understand truly how dangerous these dogs are. The whole thing with trying to get him to come back and all of that is a futile waste of time. You can't go chasing after them or calling them and expecting them to come there have to be other contextual factors. For instance it's dinner time, he knows you actually have the food. He's on a prong collar and he knows if he pulls it's going to put pressure on him that he doesn't want. Or a factor that's specific to the dog. For instance some will come when you kneel down others will come when you have something interesting in your hand. But at all times Kangals will do what they want and it's your job to keep that dog in a safe place so it can't harm another person or someone's animal or yourself. You need more of a plan buddy

@@hassank8472 Well yes they could. If the relationship with the dog is not handled properly by the owner, certainly the dog could hurt it. Any dog could do this. They have teeth and an animal brain. That said, which dog would you rather get bitten by: a beagle or a kangal? Now that said, assuming the owner and dog have a good relationship, everything should be fine. My concern in this video is that this dog is off leash in public areas in a number of these videos I've seen him publish. The risk is too high to be doing this and I'm concerned that this guy who has only owned this one kangal and only has three years of experience, is going to be very surprised and in a very bad situation if something goes wrong. I have far far more experience than he does and probably most people that comment here. Kangals are wonderful dogs but you should always err on the side of caution with them. And don't try to force them to do things that are against their breeding and instincts. They are livestock guardian dogs. They are not companion dogs and pets like a golden retriever or a doodle or something like that.

Since she was a puppy, we would take her on golf cart rides to the lake, about a mile there and back. As the weather got bad she rides in the back seat of my truck. She loves these rides more than anything. While she’s on the ride she is at work. She thinks she owns everything. While riding she does not want any human interaction because she’s focuses on the squirrels and deer. One thing about a Kangal, there are some humans that she does not like. Only a few, but we don’t know she doesn’t like certain people. Another thing, even though she’s friends with our neighbors and hugs them. If they get near our yard, she tells them to stay away.

Kangal or other Turkish LGD's rae very independent, maybe even stubborn. They mostly works freely over mountains with the flock sometimes even alone without a shepherd. While they are working, they need to often make their own decisions, since the shepherd is not always with them or far away. Otherwise, no shepherd needs a dog, which only waits for the next command. The independent ones have been selected for the future generation because of that.

Whatever she finds. She had an incident with a porcupine, one quill in her face,and one in her paw. She was smart enough to leave it alone. Another thing I've noticed with her. She must have an unbelievable tolerance for pain. She never makes a sound when she is having pain. She's been attacked by a pit bull mix, and a boxer. Both times she was attacked from behind. And both times it didn't take very long ( seconds) for her to have the attacking dogs on their backs, and her mouth around their throat. I got her off both dogs before she could do any real damage. And neither dog wanted anything to do with her after that. I still bring her to the dog park with the same dogs she's used to. But recently she's decided that she doesn't want to leave when it's time to go. So, for the time being, she's lost her dog park privileges.
