Maybe lewis would have been a bit 'ramboesque' to play bond 🤔 either way it won't have been interesting.

They made a mess of the locks though. And the windows. I think there'd be some calls to glaziers and locksmiths in the Yellow Pages after that little escapade. 😆 Seriously though. I remember the 1979 Iranian Embassy siege. Those hostage takers never knew what hit them. I think most Brits were walking a bit taller for about a week afterwards. Even lefties. That's how it's done. Hardly anybody had even heard of the SAS before then. Except SAS members. Obviously.

@user-hm3qk8vw3r You're right. 1980. 1979 was my first year at university, and I was pretty sure it happened then. My bad.

I remember actually watching this in a pub on TV ie the real siege Wow SAS came to worldwide attention that day instead of being in the shadows. For some reason the UK was “left alone” for a fair number of years 👍👍 A case of if you want to cause chaos and mayhem, we will introduce you to those nice men from Hereford”

Brilliant scene in a brilliant movie. What gets me is the flow of the assault...It's almost mechanical especially as they clear the bedrooms. Alot of the Hollywood movies make it far too epic and over dramatise the shoots, but here it's brutally realistic for the most part..

Lots of comments of how Lewis Collins should have played Bond. He auditioned but Cubby Broccoli, although he appreciated Collins tough persona, thought he wasn't polished enough to play the secret agent. It should be mentioned that at the height of his fame in the TV series The Professionals, an episode featured a minor bit part role of a wireless operator spying in a van, played by none other than a very youthful looking Pierce Brosnan! Another piece of trivia is that one of the main directors of that series was Martin Campbell who went on to direct Casino Royale!!

Lewis Collins spent a lot of time skydiving in Southern California. I met him when I was a novice in the late 80's and made several jumps with him. He was just a regular chap, quite friendly and a good skydiver. I had no idea he was "someone" until a friend from NZ told me about his background. He certainly didn't strut around like a "star" as so many other actors would have done. When I found out about "The Final Option" (the US title for "Who Dares Wins") I immediately went out, rented a copy and made a VHS copy of my own. I still have it! The embassy scene, and the rescue of Skellen's family, remain some of the best action sequences I've seen.

I was in a bar in New York when the real siege was ended I turned to a guy on my left and said “It’s great to be BRITISH” He replied “ Oh yeah,we wouldn’t have let it happen in the first place” I said to him “ Yes your right, but then again you allowed Vietnam to happen and it took you decades to end it,we did that in 10 minutes without a scratch” Fckn BRITS Was all he could say.
