This is all just an opinion from an average everyday Joe who is trying to stay involved and keep up with it all (your mileage may vary). You can look at all the metrics you want about transactions but at the end of the day what is the ultimate goal of all this. If the goal is one day BTC will be a financial system that will be adopted and used by the masses, you have to look at how complicated your system is. Yeah, you can have some good current metrics but who is doing all these transactions. I would guess they are mainly being done by a minority of very technically minded people who live and breathe this stuff and spends hours learning how to use it and manage it. I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed but my experience so far is that it is way too complicated to understand how to manage your transactions so as to keep fees low and have the ability to move around some decent number of BTC. So, no ... in its current state the LN is a long way off from the everyday person being content with using it day in day out without giving up and saying it is just too complicated. I think years down the road it will get there, but still a lot of work has to be done.
