How big of a tank do they need the first year? Like is something like 33 gallons enough the first year. Then move it into something bigger?
@BillysReefRx10 күн бұрын
33 gallons is too small. A lot of their growth is based off the size of the tank. They need space to swim. I would go with at least 60 gallons (length of tank is important here) then upgrade to a larger tank.
@shawndoe283416 күн бұрын
Loved it when you said no water changes. I'm hoping I can try this again & if it works, I'd like to try adding a simple macroalgae that wouldn't mind limited water movement. If you or any veiwers could recommend some macroalgae species that could live in this setup, that would be appreciated. Take Care: Shawn

Hey Shawn. I use Chaeto for my macro algae however, I have heard a lot of folks having great success with an algae scrubber. I’m probably looking on putting one on my new tank setup.

Here in Australia it's just too easy to get fresh salt water, we have guys who are licensed to collect it from national parks and beaches that are far away from cities. We have companies that will deliver it to your door in 1000L lots (264 gal). It's a good weekly ritual because it makes you "disrupt" the tank and look at it. You can see which fish act weird under mild stress, it makes you notice stuff about corals as the water level drops. It reminds you to check all the equipment over, see if lines are clogged or skimmer is too wet/dry etc. It reminds you that your filter media needs to be changed sometimes. And so on.

It's amazing how easy it is for you to access fresh salt water! Those weekly rituals definitely keep you in tune with your tank and its inhabitants.

Super nice tank man! You have a lot of skill and I hope to be close to that level one day🤞 I am about to enter the saltwater world and I want to start off with an 8ft tank as I know eventually I will want to upgrade. Is this a bad idea and would I be able to run it with similar to your filtration or need more for that size? Also where can I get some of those shelves you have on the inside of your tank? Guessing glued with no magnet?
@BillysReefRxАй бұрын
Thanks for watching. The bigger the better, same with filtration. Which shelves are you referring to?

I’m nearly done with my basement fish room so I’ll share some lessons learned. I did FRP walls and epoxy floor covering. It’s a semi finished space, but I wanted it water resistant as possible. They make nice PVC wall panels you can get. I would consider those instead of drywall. Other products are Fiberglass reinforced plastic panels. I’d also install some dedicated 20 amp circuits with waterproof covers and make sure you have a little utility sink. I wish I would have done a drop ceiling for a more finished look, but I covered my ceiling with cheaper Polywall panels to contain the insulation. Construction can get a little spendy-especially infrastructure for a fish room, so do your planning and leave options! If you’re going for a finished look, I highly recommend running some conduit through the walls in case you want to run wires or tubing afterwards. Good luck and happy planning!
@BillysReefRxАй бұрын
Thanks for all the great advice. I am also doing epoxy flooring and several other things you mentioned. Cant wait for it to be finished.

@benmrgamw6819 ай бұрын
Usually the top guys in the hobby have skin in the game and want you to buy their equipment or that of their sponsors.. how about everyone coming together to find the best and easiest way to do no water changes? Also there are people that do a lot of water changes and don't have a tank close to this.. why not learn instead of unwarranted criticism.

Sounds like you have a good plan in your mind. Why not use the 300 gallon stock tank as your sump you have it already and wouldn't need to remove any of the substrate. I use a 150 gallon stock tank for my 130 main display. I also plan to install a heat exchanger to heat the tank off of my hot water tank.
@BillysReefRx10 ай бұрын
The 300 gallon stock tank has a pretty big footprint, and I don’t know if I want to take up all that room. I would probably be fine with the 150 gallon tank. Not really sure yet to be honest

I really want to get the reef mat 500 but i would be putting it in a 20 long tank do you think this would work in a sump that size ? And now that it has been a year since you have been running the reef mat 500 would you still recommend it for use ?
