Loved the movie, Finchmaster is one of a kind❤ Unless the police detectives are completely incompetent, the zip tie bruises will give away the foul play of the death of the secretary, so that is another sloppy mistake by the killer.

It is difficult to try and improve on perfection. It is also futile to try and second guess a genius like Orson Welles. If you really want to see how you would have approached directing this great scene, you would have to start where Welles started: with the script. In order to understand how you as director would approach this scene, you would have to know how it fits in with the other scenes in the script. Your decisions about location, lighting, blocking, composition, camera motion, etc. would come from your interpretation of the meaning of the script. And no two directors will ever interpret the same script the same way. Which means all of your choices for location, lighting, blocking, composition, camera motion, even casting will be decidedly different from Welles and anyone else. What would be more useful for aspiring directors is to understand how Welles in collaboration with Gregg Toland eventually came to settle on the choices that ended up in the final cut of the film. It's quite fascinating to know where they started and all of the different rewrites and revisions Welles went through until he final settled on what ended up on screen. That was quite an education for me.

I actually did a lot of the work you’re talking about (not exactly, but similar) in a different video where I break down the story in greater detail. Here’s a link if you’re interested: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKjVZaJrab6gbpYfeature=shared
@jamesking24582 күн бұрын
@ Thanks for the link. While searching for a copy of the script for “Citizen Kane”, I came across info on Wellesnet about just how many revisions to the script there were and how Welles continued to rewrite the script through production. We all agree that Welles was a genius. But the process that this genius went through to create his masterpiece is as fascinating as the masterpiece, itself. At least it is to me.

Also, in Chapter Three ➡️ NEW ORLEANS / The Lawyer, he says, “Empathy is weakness” In his in internal monologue then his eye twitches. It’s about him actually having empathy.
@Ayosubzero6 күн бұрын
My theory: she drinks the flight of whiskeys 🥃🥃🥃🥃 then pours another for herself. The Killer drinks the fifth glass of whiskey. She was surprised because he actually imbibed. This showed empathy. It was her last meal. Earlier in the film his eye twitches when he says: “empathy. ” I think the twitch is a signifier that he cares about people, that he’s actually capable of warmth. He’s just highly selective of it.

Not that I think you missed it, but you didn't mention the fact that she had to shoot the state police trooper at the border. It serves, in my opinion, multiple purposes. First: she was told to just observe, and this made her an active participant. Second: it brings home the reality of the situation. Nobody can be trusted, and violence is omnipresent, and her survival dependent on her using lethal force. The other men on the team cannot always protect her. It sets her on edge, and makes her angry, and when they return to base, she lashes out to Matt. Is that important in terms of plot? Probably not, but it sure raised the stakes
@HowStoriesWork6 күн бұрын
Excellent observation and comment! I think it’s a great aspect to point out, because it’s essential to her character development, too. She can’t “go back” to normal after that. As you said, she’s an active participant as opposed to just a pawn. Perfect addition!

I disagree for one simple fact. This movie is based on a series of comics. David F said he would be willing to make sequels if the original does well financially. Unfortunately it seemed to have mostly gone by unnoticed so I doubt we'll get a sequel. But the fact David said that implies he would still be alive at the end of the first movie obviously.
@HowStoriesWork7 күн бұрын
I also heard that, and I figured that they’d retcon it by suggesting that he had an antidote and/or that part of his face wouldn’t work anymore in the sequel. But, this is the best argument I’ve heard for saying my take is incorrect. I just think there are two many blatant hints for it to not be true

You took the long way around the block to say nothing, we want to know how a man could survive 3 days
@HowStoriesWork11 күн бұрын
The long way around the block is to say… surviving for 3 days isn’t the point of the story. I did hear Wesley Huff (a Canadian biblical scholar) suggest that being in the belly of a whale for 3 days could have been a metaphor for Jonah dying. As in the belly of a whale in the ocean was akin to “being in the depths of Sheol.” But, I still think focusing there misses the point of the story of Jonah, which is about his inability to see that he is condemning himself by refusing to forgive the Ninevites. What significance do you think him surviving (or as Wesley eluded to, maybe dying) in the whale has to the story?

I love how we basically DID what happened in this movie by taking out the head of the sinaloa cartel and his son. Then everything got way worse because that created a power vacuum where more violent cartels took over. Jalisco New Generation is essentially the new cartel in power, and they're way worse than the Sinaloa cartel were. More violent in general, more dangerous drugs cut into everything(fentanyl) and more bent on aggressively invasive expansion strategies (in American border states). The "good intentions" of the CIA character Josh Brolin played seem to have helped pave the road to hell. It's almost like that's what certain sects of our political elite (*cough* corporate interests *cough*) wanted to happen so they could justify military response (probably under Trump). Then they can "control" the extremely lucrative market disparity that is the southern border. There are no "good guys" in this. Just bigger fish.

Contrary to some elaborate opinion that the real protagonist is Alejandro, the Mexican prosecutor turned assassin seeking for and enacting an unsatisfying revenge. I held it that Kate is the real protagonist because it is her who has meaningful conversations although short and not with other women, being an action movie, but with her partner Reg, the black FBI lawyer agent. It is her values that are smashed and her life that is put on the line, not by the criminals but by Alejandro to fulfill a technical requirement. Alejandro is mainly a secondary figure to Matt who describes him as "my bird dog". Alejandro´s only meaningful conversation takes place with a Mexican law-enforcement official is about his personal tragedy.

Is it ever made clear how BDT's character got so well-trained as an assassin? I assume it was with the CIA because of his relationship with Matt?? He was a lawyer...or could that have just been his cover? I loved the movie but I was confused at times. Thanks for the breakdown, Jay.
@HowStoriesWorkАй бұрын
That is a GREAT question. In the script, the opening scene has him on a mission with a special forces team. It gives the impression that he’s well-trained, though it doesn’t say by whom. But, I think based on that scene (which isn’t in the movie) he was likely trained by US special forces. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@Hstevenson6918 күн бұрын
In Sicario 2 Matt Graves(Josh Brolins character) commented that losing Alejandro as an expendable asset was not acceptable because he was so difficult to "make." I'm assuming Alejandro was trained by the CIA and he was seen as a prospect because he was driven intrinsically by a desire for revenge. Which not only made him willful but easy to control. With CIA backing he probably received high level training from multiple different military branches.
@JeremySayers3810 күн бұрын
Soldiering is not too hard, a day weapons training with some experienced guys is enough to know the basics. Some self practice and that is enough for what Alehandro does.

Alejandro has an ark as well. In fact he is the true protagonist. The film switches to his perspective only after his story ark is revealed and we realize that the whole story is driven by his desire for revenge and the willingness of certain parts of the US government to help him achieve it.
