I thought they would have incinerated old mattresses and then removed any metal springs that were inside them for recycling after incineration.

If everyone can recycle a bit better, it would make the job of these people easier so they don't get hurt or killed

It isn't widely recycled, though, as it is a low-grade plastic and recycling it is not considered to be worth it.

You are in a way correct peter. But it is still a better way then to dump it at the landfill. What we do in my country is you can drop it of for free at a recycling yard. If it isn't soiled it gets a new use being mixed in with building materials to improve insulation value. If its soiled it has to go in your waste at home where it will be either burned or put in the landfill depending on capacity at the plants

Ran out of space :) Those incinerators need mixed waste,as I mentioned the plastics are seperate stream so the incinerators now import waste from other country's like Italy(See Napels and die...by the smell of it)they have lots of stinking smelly garbage and that burns very well :) Still there are a few dumps like the one in this video but when they are full no new ones are planned. And that's how it should be... no leftovers to fill the dump.

Here in the Netherlands we now have separate plastic collection, and it's free so it works. Also there is the glasbak and papierbak :) The rest of our trash is mostly recycled and what's left goes in to the incinerators (we are good at that) and the ashes are used as fillers in stuff like concrete and other building materials.

The Netherlands doesn't really have the right terrain for landfills when you think about it. But what do they do with the air pollution control residue? That has to be disposed of in designated hazardous waste landfills (it is packed full of extremely toxic and carcinogenic chemicals), but the nearest such landfills to the Netherlands would probably be in France or Germany...

Lol,you call that modern advanced garbage processing,I still see a landfill... that's not advanced that's stone-age technology.
