Couldn’t find the English version, so I’ll ask here. How does this artificial herl look in the water? It look like a smaller version of Estaz rather than real peacock, so it would have more flash? I’ve never tried it.

Ivar, you must have very large gnats in Iceland. :-) Where I fished in Massachusetts & Maine (northeastern US), black gnat patterns like this worked extremely well, but they were tied in sizes 16 to smaller than I could see like 28. These were to imitate our evil, horrible biting gnats. I think yours may be larger but don’t bite. Yes? I don’t know what my KZbin feed is doing. I just found this video buried far down in my subscriber feed after noticed your videos haven’t been appearing lately. Matt’s have been showing regularly in my “new” feed but yours haven’t. ???? Maybe I have too many subscriptions? I’ll try to catch up. Hope you are well.

Instead of “Ivar’s Greenhead,”, why not call it, “Ivar’s Chatreuse Attractor.” It is chatreuse & quite a nice attractor fly. I bet it also would work well as a saltwater fly. I have some body material that looks the same as your chartreuse material, so I think I will try copying your fly to see if it will work on the pond where the Healing Waters group fishes. I will also be trying out the material in black (with dark, red highlights) & a black marabou tail to see if it works for imitating leeches. Do you have leeches in Iceland? I’m sorry I didn’t see this earlier. I am way behind in watching my tying videos

I'm in the UK and this fly is similar to the Black Gnat which calls for a black cock tail, black floss/thread body, black hen hackle, and a pair of grey wingslips. Can also be tied as a dry fly. Both flies are used for river brown trout.

PT is always effective. Have you tried comparing the results of different colors with the natural pheasant? It never occurred to me to try different colors when I could still fish. I always used the natural feather over lead wraps, and sometimes tied it with a gold bead to have it for times when I needed it to fish deeper water.
2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment Bob! The purple colour has turned out to work great for Icelandic conditions. I fish the natural colored one a lot too. Works great. I put bead on then like this one, Tungsten bead for it to sink fast.

I only catch and release here in Canada, so it’s much better for me and the fish to only use a single, barbless hook! Nice pattern!

Thanks for the comment! The Harpa pattern is a killer pattern for salmon and seatrout! You will find out using it :) Over 95% of my fishing is with a single hook. While fishing I pinch of the barb on almost all the hooks I use. And yes, I do almost only catch and release.

Great fly, ívar! And related to hooks for salmon/sea trout flies, I only use single hook flies and Ahrex doubles for tube flies. Just because I do not feel comfortable casting trebles on a fly rod, only on baitcasting and spinning tackle.

If I could still fish, this is a fly I would definitely try using for landlocked salmon on the Penobscot river in Maine. Most local fly fishers there say not to use much flash on flies, so they would likely frown at my using this. However, if it is successful on Atlantic salmon in Iceland, it should also work on landlocks.

I like it. For some reason, as soon as I saw the thumbnail, I got the impression of the fly as a formal dress tuxedo, black & white with a red bow tie. Of course, maybe I’m a little bit crazy from winter cabin fever. ;-) I’ve never fished in an area with grayling available. You said that “The Savior” really appeals to grayling but didn’t seem to say that it really works on trout. Are there flies that work particularly well for trout but not for grayling or ones that work for grayling & not for trout? If yes, what are the differences?
8 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment Bob! Yes, the Saviour is the name of it, or before it got the name "The non-Killer" because there is a fly that is alike that's named Killer here in Iceland. It's a very productive pattern for trout and Arctic char here in Iceland. We do not have grayling here so I can't really give you an answer to your question. :)

Since we don’t have royalty in the U.S & the fly’s creator is from the U.S., I am wondering whose coronation is being celebrated. However, the fly is very pretty & just begs for me to tie some copies. I wonder if the fish see it as a smelt. I’m surprised that you haven’t had luck with it yet. Maybe adding a topping of peacock herl & some silver Flashabou or Krystal Flash below the white bucktail would help your results. Rainbow smelt streamers (with more colors) are really popular here in New England & have been really productive for me in both salt & freshwater. A majority of smelt patterns in NE are featherwing streamers but, I like to use bucktail in the same colors for faster tying & durability in rocky areas like the Penobscot River in Maine or coastal cliffs and rock ledges. Right now I’m tying a batch of bucktail Clouser Minnows for fresh & salt in the same colors. I’ll send you some pics & the color list if you want to try them in Iceland. I don’t know if you have any rainbow smelt there. The colors don’t seem to match up with the pictures I can find of capelin or silver smelt that you do have, but you might have fun tying them anyway.
8 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment Bob! Maybe you are better off without the royalty... I wonder the same, but it might have something to do with the colours in the wing. I agree with you suggestions on adding the peacock and the crystal flash to the fly. Totally agree. Yes please mail me some pictures of the Clousers! I have tried them in Iceland in dark colours and caught some trout on it.

I like the purple body with the fur wing. Why not use a soft fur instead of marabou? It should be more durable and still provide a lot of movement. When I saw my first video on a Cormorant a few years ago, I assumed it was intended to look like a small minnow, so I was really surprised to learn it was supposed to represent a snail or other invertebrate. That still puzzles me, since it doesn’t look at all like a snail or aquatic insect I’ve ever seen. I also don’t understand how the fly relates to the bird, cormorant, unless it’s a reference to the fly as a “fish-getter.” Cormorants hadn’t been popularized when my back stopped me from fishing, so I’ve never fished one. I do plan to tie some for the Healing Waters program I tie for. Cormorants are supposed to work well on still water, and the group fishes a pond, so I will be really interested in how well the Cormorant works for you. I bet your fur winged version would also work well on a river or stream as a small minnow.
9 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment Bob! I agree, should be more durable in water then the marabou and makes a lot of movement in the water. About the name I ain't quite sure how it came. I've used this version mostly in still water.
