I think, the only exception to this rule is when you go from Shuto-Uke (in its real application as an attack to the throat) to a gyaku-zuki in ZD. In this case, the distance is too small to rotate on the heel. If you rotate on the heel you will overshoot by around 30cm.

Everybody has been doing the spin slowly. I don't know where this speedy version comes from. It is tiring to see a new version of things come out every decade 😪

It's always been a fast movement. I think the slow movement comes from competitions where the competitor wants to stand out.

@@molefilebone check old videos of Kanku Dai. Kanazawa's tapes, or the old black and white tapes of the JKA, was always executed slowly.

I used to find that annoying as well. You get a kata down pat and then some high and mighty (up themselves) sensei wants to boost his ego by making an unnecessary change. I remember I used to ignore the change and do it as I had learned. I figured after having earned my dan grade through hell, I had the right. And if they don't like it - f*ck them!

I must say Sensei kagawa didn’t teach the real thing! Even the demonstrator was doing it wrong! Haha. Sensei kagawa taught correct body position of each movement which is way Better than 99.99999% karate teacher who is still alive today. But if one need to find out more depth, the Sensei Nishiyama ‘s seminar is the best source. Though he didn’t speak out everything, he demo the movement with hints and show correct way to apply power. Sensei Kagawa probably knows too but didn’t bother to reveal everything and frankly students don’t know even he speak it out. So why bother.

nothing is 100% correct,why bother?

@@dathramer9612thank you to reply my long ago post. Too me a while to recall and I have to watch this video again to see what it was. I had been attended sensei Kagawa’s seminar and I expect him from my heart. I know how much he knows in this martial art. But what this appeared to me a low level training. With his presence, people will believe this is how join should be performed and this is terribly wrong. What appeared in video is a western or modern kata. Most karate kata was performed in wrong force flow from application. But least shotokan has a tradition to keep basic training into its movement and hide some meanings in the kata. The way join is taught will completely hide or erase the meanings in the kata. This is why it should not be wrong and shouldn’t teach this way. I am afraid if I do t make comments now, people will use sensei kagawa’s clip and use it as a bible reference. This would be terribly wrong. In this sense , sensei Kanazawa, sensei Yahara, or sensei nishiyama all done a better job on this. Kata can be interpreted different But with correct meaning and movement based on intention. But sports kata should be eliminated. This is why I can’t tolerate.

That section on gedan barai to kagi tsuki, seems to change. Sometimes it's feet on one line for gedan barai (& no foot adjustment for kiba dachi). And sometimes as shown here.

When performed as correctly as this , it is an immensely powerful kick that will stop an attacker dead in his tracks. This kick as well as a fast mid level front foot side kick usually do the business against an aggressive opponent moving into you.
