Great series of vids. I am in the middle of building a 502 as a standalone and I wondered if you felt able to share your layout diagram and other documentation? I am using the Service Manual as a guide but not all of the component locations are marked (e.g. RS232 components and some high numbered resistors). I have the BOM that you have but not much else. This brings back memories. I assembled one of these in 1976 with all 22 of the S-100 bus slots enabled: 2200 solder joints for that alone. If I remember correctly, the kit cost me about $750.00 at the time, not including a card with a paper tape reader, a serial card, and additional memory cards. I had a copy of Microsoft BASIC on paper tape, but I do not remember if it came with the IMSAI 8080. I eventually sold the machine to a local utility company that was using the same models for their generating stations. Mine had a broken trace inside the layers of the front board that I jumpered around once I hunted down the break.

This radio, the viability of cost in the market keeps it alive. American and other western find it workable cheap, new yet nostalgic inbtherms of the analogy setup. It truelly amazes me that in flood DSP chip these days they're are still assembling this thing.

Back in the day, when someone would built up an IMSAI kit, the first test programs that they would toggle in (from page 35 in the manual) would read the front panel Programmed Input switches (input port FF) and write to the front panel Programmed Output LEDs (output port FF). Not rocket science by any stretch, but these two programs would verify proper functionality of the system and start helping the user to become familiar with how a microprocessor works.

With those 1/2 or 1 watt resistors I used to wind the leads to a 1 or 1 1/4 turn loop coming out of the resistor to give a constant distance from the board and a bit of metal to radiate heat before going into the board. I adopted this technique from old tube radios/tv sets of the 60‘s where I found examples of this. Older electronics of the 40‘s and 50‘s were almost all point to point soldered on 2 or 4point lugs riveted onto resin-paper boards which most of the time had plenty airflow to cool hot parts.

@ShadowTronBlog
@ShadowTronBlog 3 ай бұрын
One of the real joys of these early machines is you can fully understand both the systems hardware and software. You can compile your own version of CP/M. BASIC, assembler and C are all available for programming. You can also design your own boards. The machine is simple enough to really dig into yet capable enough to run applications such as editors and games. There's nothing like adding support for hardware you designed directly into CP/M.

You state that you prefer the double swipe style of I.C. sockets over the machine style. Can you suggest/recommend any particular place to purchase them from ?
@ShadowTronBlog
@ShadowTronBlog 3 ай бұрын
Let me clarify a bit. Dual Swipe (or double swipe as I called them) are generally available. For most of my projects i use dual swipe however for the best reliability I use machined pin. Machined pins are generally more reliable but are more expensive. Jameco is one vendor I buy from. You'll see examples of both socket types here: www.jameco.com/shop/KeywordSearchResultView?langId=-1&storeId=10001&catalogId=10001&search_type_c=jamecoall&freeText=ic+socket

Hi there! Can you please tell where can i find Unit E in kicad 8 ?
@ShadowTronBlog
@ShadowTronBlog 5 ай бұрын
Not sure I follow the question? Does ERC tell you the unit is missing? Sometimes, in the schematic editor I need to add a 2nd component of the same type for the component missing the unit, delete the duplicate units the change the reference on the unit that is left over. I've accidentally deleted or name one of the units wrong in the past. What does ERC say when you run it? If this is a KiCAD 8 issue I haven't ran into it as I'm still running 7.

Can you explain what a port is in this case? Is it a memory address the CPU have access to or what is it?
@ShadowTronBlog
@ShadowTronBlog 5 ай бұрын
The 8080/Z-80 can directly address 65536 (64K) bytes of RAM. Each also supports 256 I/O ports. The I/O ports are numbered 0..255; each port can either write or read 8-bits. When a port is addressed the port number (0..255) is output on A0..A7 and a byte is either read or written on the data pins (D0..D7). The CPU has pins that control memory read or write, it also has pins that control port read/write. While memory will store the byte written ports work different. It's up to the device listening for the port to be written too / read from to take whatever action the device is designed to do. On an RS-232 card the data in/out of the UART might be on port 10. Port 11 might configure the UART for items such as baud rate. Port 12 might have the status bits for the UART, one bit might mean there is a character ready to be read from the UART. The user needs to read the manual for the card they want to use and configure the card for the ports they want it to use and/or modify the software to use those ports. Look at the opcodes in() and out(). BASIC usually defines the functions INP()) and OUTP() or something similar to talk directly to ports. Hope this helps.

Without the datasheet they can be difficult to figure out. Knowing the mappings makes it easier. Useless no, but you need to know some of the details. In the end it's just a ROM. Like an old EPROM it's had to know what the content does without the larger context.

I have a 220 outlet in my shed for my air compressor, but I need to use a heat gun for soldering which is 110. Can I use one of these? and how would I plug the 110 style plug that's on this machine into a l6-30 outlet? An adapter? Will this even work for what I need it to?
@ShadowTronBlog
@ShadowTronBlog 6 ай бұрын
I'm not an electrician and am not qualified to provide any real guidance beyond this: 220 can be lethal. I don't recommend you go about working on the outlet yourself. I suspect an electrician could add two 110 outlets to the 220 circuit but you will need to ask them. If you use a step down transformer you need to make sure it can deal with the current/power demands of the soldering tool. Some ratings are based on short term "spike" current demands instead of constant current demands. If the step down transformer is underrated you risk a shop full of smoke or even a fire.

Nice video, thanks for sharing. So that means that loading CP/M first is required for other programs? I have a kaypro but the boot disk seems to be defect because it just keeps spinning but not loading anything. If I try Microsoft basic I get “can not read your diskette”. When I try a word program for the kaypro, I get the message that I should copy the master programs but can’t do anything.
@ShadowTronBlog
@ShadowTronBlog 6 ай бұрын
Yes, CP/M needs to be loaded and running before you can load other programs. CP/M is the operating system for the Kaypro in the same way Windows is the operating system for a modern PC though CP/M is much more primitive. The spinning disc could mean the floppy is bad, there is an issue with floppy drive itself or a deeper issue in the system. If you search eBay for "Kaypro boot disk" someone is selling a set of bootable disks for the Kaypro 2x,4 and 10 systems.
@BenM39435
@BenM39435 6 ай бұрын
@@ShadowTronBlog Ah oke, thats great to hear. I get the message with other disks that the computer cant read the diskette with, for example: mbasic. I swapped the disk drives. I get for both drives the same results with the disk i have ( i have 5 diskettes for the kaypro II), so that gives me hope that only the diskettes are the problem. And not the drives. If I put a random empty floppy in it, i dont hear the drive head moving, it just keeps spinning. If i put the CP/M diskette in, i can hear the head moving two times. Then after 10 seconds i can hear the head again moving one time. This just continues, but nothing happens, the message with 'insert diskette in drive A' stays. As I told earlier, with a diskette with for example a wordperfect program for the kaypro II, i get the message that 'i try to boot a diskette, but that i first need to copy the disk'. I read that it is a sort of protection for the software, that the user does not overwrite the diskette by accident. Thanks for the ebay sugestion, that guy lives also in the Netherlands( me too), so i had contact with him. He will send me some disks. Thanks for the reply. Old computers are really fun. I have a couple, but this is the first CP/M machine for me.
