Anyone know or have theories on why the snap gear would have a lower catch ratio and not catch big fish? 26:25

IPCC is lying and it's far much worse. They predicted 1 c by 2050 in 2010. It's above 1 c now. 😂

interesting talk would you be able to post your slides I'd like to reference some of them. in our city we are going through a coastal hazards process and information like this would be incredibly helpful to help inform the discussion.

Just a sidebar. I've spent my entire adult life sportfishing in Juan de Fuca Strait. This year(2020) there has been plenty of Coho. The in migrating adult Coho feed ravenously while transiting the Strait. Normally juvenile Herring(3 to 4 inches) comprise much of there diet. These juvenile Herring are the out-migrating hatch from the spring Herring spawn in Georgia Strait. When the juvenile Herring are scarce the adult Coho feed on the out-migrating salmon smolts which are between 6 and 8 inches long. It's not uncommon to find 2 to 6 smolts in the stomachs of one adult Coho. Multiply that by the thousands and you have significant smolt mortality. It also emphasizes the importance of having abundant Herring.

@@EcopathwithEcosim Hello Jereon, Thanks for your reply sorry about the late message, can you tell for the diet matrix unit is taken as KG/ year or its a percentage? and how we can calculate the Q/B and P/B of a functional group with more than one species thanks.

Before you start killing seals and sea lions, start at the heart of the problem and introduce a 5 year ban on salmon fishing. As far back as 50 years ago, we were warned by scientists/biologists that we were harvesting too many fish from the waters. Yes the seals are eating the smolts but if you stop overfishing there will be more fish to spawn. Culls historically are short term, band-aid solutions that don't work. DFO and the commercial industry are the problem. Since this video, DFO have admitted that they over estimated the Herring population. This error resulted in 25% of the Herring being removed from the water in 2019 which is devastating with serious implications. Never trust scientists that are hired by people financially tied to the commercial fishing industry.

To all those folks that signed a petition to stop the herring fishery in the Strait of Georgia, if you are not afraid of having your beliefs challenged this should give you cause to reconsider
@ChrisRussell0072 жыл бұрын
Seems like stopping the Herring fishing would provide a food source for the adult Salmon instead of them eating Smolts.

at 13:00 ; The Seal diet data from around the Georgia strait: 2% of their diet was juvenile Chinook and Coho. But with 40,000 Seals in the Georgia strait the numbers equated to the Seals consuming about half of the Coho smolts, and about 33% of Chinook smolts that are entering the ocean yearly. While there is still controversy, the controversy is no longer about whether Seals are the most proximate cause of the Salmon smolt mortality, they (Seals) most definitely are (the cause).

Can I just say something. There are vary few people that actually chum waters dropping bait in the water is not chumming that is fishing. Also there are tons of people that work with scientists and there was a public fishing group called the black tip challenge and they tagged tons of sharks for science. Also I know I need a little more studies time but can I ask where you got the hammerhead topic and saying that land-based fishing kills most of them you need to get tagging and then find which one dies because I let all my sharks go health an I can assure you they survived!! Please don't throw Land based shark fishing under the bus and say that we are most threatening group because we are not!!!!
