Your generator will not work very long, if you continue to start it as you are doing. The correct way to start an engine with recoil start is to pull the cord slowly UNTIL it takes hold, from there you can put effort into

Is the speed governor good?
@harrothepilot2 жыл бұрын
A bit basic, it does govern but for a generator its probably not as tight as you'd want it. An electronic governor is probably a better option for constant output. For a pump its probably fine.

@@harrothepilot compared to 186f kind of engine are these worse? i only have had a gx160 and the governor is bad for big power surge, it often stalls
@harrothepilot2 жыл бұрын
@@31knot I don’t have any experience with the 186 style of engine. This setup is a four pole alternator for 240V ( Aus ). The engine turns at 1920 rpm for 1500rpm and 50hz at the alternator. 1970 rpm is max torque rpm for the engine, with redline at 2,400 rpm. The alternator is a 6500W max but this engine is capable of about 5kw max output only. It can take about a 2kw load before the governor responds and ups the power a bit. 3-4 hz variation is common, say starting at 52hz and the engine not responding till 48-49hz. That’s why I say about an electronic governor and linkage with some mechanical advantage for more accuracy. But, how far do you go??
@31knot2 жыл бұрын
@@harrothepilot actually i haven't built one. I just have one gx160 that i use to drive a high pressure washing machine and sometimes an air compressor.so rpm isn't sensitive for both application but i noticed it bogged down the engine so much under load. Now I was looking to buy an alternator, i would like it to be a 1500rpm one. I was hoping i could couple it to my gx160, and should i need bigger power then i would upgrade the engine. Do you think it's doable?

I don't know why many people from outside Asia hate Chinese diesel, I think Chinese diesel is pretty good because i have it too! I have a 24 hp Jiangdong engine for rice milling, the engine is pretty good and lasts almost 10 years, but that doesn't mean there is no broken part, But I think it's okay because I bought it at a cheap price so I get not as good quality as Yanmar, but if I buy Yanmar I have to save more money haha

So the Diesel governor maintaines the 50Hz? How well does it keep rpm when the load switches?
@harrothepilot3 жыл бұрын
Average at best. It can vary a couple of hz. This one used to run a seperate electronic governor, which didnt last due the vibrations and quality of the electronics. If this runs with a 2Kw load and you add another Kw, it can drop a hz. It could probably also be improved with internal work on the governor linkages ( typical Chinese tollerances ). It runs pumps and compressors and resistive loads without worry though.

@@harrothepilot Thank you for your reply. A couple of Herz is not too bad, I guess that huge flywheel helps here. I am in love with these engines and about to buy a 15.5HP Yanmar Diesel. I live off grid solar and charge an electric motorcycle and a Tesla on that system. So perhaps instead of direct charging the EVs I run a series of truck alternators to charge my solar battery and then charge the vehicles via the 8kW sine wave inverter.

@@moestrei Good stuff. The Yanmar would outlive one of these engines by about 4 to 1. Sounds like you have done your homework there. This is only used for standby purposes, but I’d certainly go Yanmar for regular duty. One hint, keep any belts as short as possible. Cheers

This was a pile of crap when I got it. Stripped right down to long engine, new rad gasket, intake and exhaust gaskets, governor work, stripped the poxy Chinese paint job and painted it properly. Flywheel loose, so clocked and spec tightened, starter didn’t align properly with ring gear, had to set right, now reasonably quiet and reliable operation. Checked valve clearances, one loose, one tight, adjusted properly. Injector out and cleaned. Has done a few hundred hours with total reliability. Is noisy, but hey.... Starts first hit without fail, no ether, but winter only sees about -3 or -4C where I am. There are stories of them doing thousands and thousands of hours with minimal work. It is only for standby, not regular use, but I think it would be ok given regular service. Hope this helps

Hi harrothepilot, does this engine have a variable speed control button?
@harrothepilot3 жыл бұрын
No, o david. It has a mechanical governor thats operated via a small lever virtually directly on the opposite side of the flywheel. It maintains speed ok, but not much better than that. Fine for a water pump, but you have to keep an eye on it with a generator, or have some really good smoothing electronics.
