No permits! At least not where we live. PT works great too, just have to stain it to get that cedar color. We had to travel to a small town in TN to get all the cedar

Look great. Suggestion, you can use a router and put dado's in the vertical pieces to hole the shelves. Much stronger and no hardware. Also like others have asked, how are these attached to the wall?

Yes the dados may have been a better solution in this situation! And I used several L brackets scattered throughout where there were studs

We used a mixture of pocket holes into studs and small L brackets spread throughout. Not how I would do it nowadays tho

Probably a cut off from whatever material they used to build the shelves. Maybe 2” in width, using that to attach to the studs. I’ve done that on several recent projects. Very common
