Great! Anything to reduce noise right! I was really wanting directivity.. It's made a real difference but now with FT8 I'm decoding several stations that cannot hear me.. LOL.. Out of frustration the other day I actually looked at prices of amps.. but that's a lot of $$$$ to get 11dB gain (or just under 2 S units) into a omni-directional vertical... Makes me wonder if I can use remote ham radio for transmit and receive off my own station.. just so I can 'rent' the transmitter/facility..

When I was in my teens I had to take care of 180 acres.. that made me decide that when I was older I would be happy with 1 acre. Every darn week the fence was down (tree) or cut (hunters?) somewhere. Fence maintenance, tree cutting, mowing, etc was a full-time job.. I got sick of it. We had a Massey Ferguson backhoe and ford tractor and winch truck and if we were not doing property maintenance it was vehicle/tractor maintenance.. never ending.. and since I was the youngest I got to be the 'go fetch' tool runner when I wasn't the muscle or operator...

Thank you for this!! I notice you choose the 43 foot non-resonant vertical over a resonant vertical. I'm wondering why you made that choice - and also what you are experiencing for DX contacts? Sincere thanks!
@N5ZYАй бұрын
A resonant vertical is only resonant on the chosen band. Granted I could build a vertical antenna for each band but I wanted just one. As for contacts, it's been working great. I did replace the tuner with an MFJ that has the ability to handle larger impedance mismatches. The ARRL Podcast "The Doctor is in" did a great article on the 43 ft vert. It's very close to being resonant on several bands.. but use a remote tuner at the base of the antenna.

@@N5ZY Thank you! I think this is the way for me to go also! I have a nice auto-tuner that will handle high wattage - so I think this vertical will be a good work-horse antenna. Thanks again!!! And best 73s! :-]

1:1 current balun. To ensure the current is balanced between the 43ft vertical and radials. This still causes the impedance to be out of range for the tuner for the lower bands like 3.5 MHz and 1.8 MHz. For those likely a 4:1 balun would likely work. I ended up replacing both the tuner and balun in 2022.. I'm thinking water got into the balun or tuner.

I'm trying to get back around to it but frankly chasing U.S. grids is second to chasing DX in this new solar cycle that has made 12 and 10 m so full of activity! As for a Log Periodic, I suspect you would have a problem with weight. These motors do not have a lot of 'brake' resistance in the gears so something heavy in the wind would likely be problematic.

@PaulGrahamM0PGX5 жыл бұрын
Looks nice and solid. Does RF interfere with the compass sensor? I've nearly finished one that works with Gpredict over wifi. It has an ESP32 that emulates the rotator side of Hamlib (as much as it needs to) so Gpredict talks to it directly. I'm using two sensors for direction and elevation as I still need to get my head round the maths involved in compensating for tilt when getting the azimuth heading, which, unfortunately means my rotator has to be level.

No but the I2C bus does get into the receive antenna... Right now it's in the 'winter storage' though.

@Indiana jones got a question for you. Since every sat is pretty much low earth orbit at this point, if the antenna begins to rotate through the arc at the correct time at a standard rate starting from the correct position on the horizon, would it not track the satellite ? Basically the motors would be 'bumped" similar to a cog on a clock. The viewing time is different depending on how low the orbit is but the rate, of change has got to be the same I would think. Or close at least. most are 98 minutes for a rotation, the ISS is 93. So, if you had a system that would move the antenna at the same rate, and manually change the arc, you would follow the sat. That said, I do like the fact that your using an Arduino and will be looking at that system, but, in my experience, many trackers trying to use both azimuth and elevation as a completely variable 3d system are fairly complex. That said, studying the link sarcnet.org/projects/project_rotator.html and one application that really impressed me and would need their complete system would be the Ship that changed heading and position, would need everything they offer !
@N5ZY5 жыл бұрын
The antenna has a 15 degree or so range so yes, you don't have to be on the bulls-eye. But they come from a variety of directions and at different rates and sometimes one after another :-) The FM sats are real easy but the SSB sats take more work and that's why I wanted a rotator and I wanted to learn Arduino.. I still need to do a follow-up video but it works great (you know, until the Oklahoma winds blew it over). Now that the Spring storms are less frequent I will start putting it all back together and get ready for Field Day.
@californiakayaker5 жыл бұрын
@@N5ZY I had coverage of Oklahoma with ao95 and have qsl cards from Alaska with contacts from northern California ! I had really wished more Hawaiians would have gotten on because I think a sat half way in between would work. That said, I used a vertical, and worked when the sats went directly over the Airport in Anchorage and a guy using a good handheld with a beam pointed straight up could receive me (I had duplex and could hear my signal) . I'd love to put a better system together with my uhf and vhf beams on some sort of tracker. Not sure I'd do any better though than my vertical when the sat is going over the airport in anchorage, as there isn't nothing beyond that !

@N5ZY6 жыл бұрын
The panadapter is attached before the filters so they would not make any difference. The filters are needed if your operating during any kind of contest. Without the add-in filters the first stage IF implements a 15 Khz filter which is very wide and makes the radio a poor choice for a contest. With the 6 KHz FL-430 though it's much better. The FL-431 at 3 KHz is helpful as well. For FT-8 I use the 6 KHz. For phone I switch between the 6 and 3 KHz a lot.

What is the proper way to tune an antenna is it at the radio or at the antenna ? To be honest no matter where you put the tuner the antenna is still out of resonance to the frequency you are using . You want to have a resonate antenna for the band your planing to use . With a tuner all your doing is making the radio see a low swr but from the tuner to the antenna that swr hasn't been reduced by any means . Sorry for the truth about what a tuner does and not do about the feed line and the antennas .
@N5ZY6 жыл бұрын
The best place for the tuner is as close to the antenna as possible to reduce loss.
@peterrod52396 жыл бұрын
how is this antennas performance compare to an inverted v dipole? is it worth the money? how is your swr? could the ground radials be place in a zigzag pattern I got a small yard possibly 40 ft by 30 feet ground wire would have to be like a L pattern. you have it very nice set up. thanks for sharing.
@N5ZY5 жыл бұрын
Sorry, I didn't see these questions. I've been very happy with it. I could not use 80m or 40 without it. I will add a coil in the autumn with a relay so I can use it on 160m and to improve the bandwidth on 80. Yes, radials can be zig-zag.. they can be shorter as well if they are ground radials. Listen to the ARRL "The Doctor Is In" podcast about verticals. When I see a DX spot I try the attic antenna.. then run outside and raise the vertical. The attic antennas, being dipoles, are way too close to the ground to be very effective. A Vertical doesn't have that problem.
@N5ZY5 жыл бұрын
Also, I don't have SWR since I have an outdoor tuner mounted to the antenna base. This is the proper way to use a vertical, unless you use ladder line all the way back in... which again, I can't do that either. Using an LDG RT-600 tuner so it can handle data for a 24-hour contest without failure.
