Ah yes, I remember it well. 1961 was one summer before my debut in little league baseball. Since then, I've been able to recall the entire starting 9, if I may include Whitey Ford as the pitcher. I do recall two deep at catcher. Forgive me, Johnny Blanchard. With only one game per week available to see, there were many greats on the club that I never knew of. For over sixty years, I have taken great comfort and joy in the memories of my lifelong heroes of the '61 Yankees and the 61 homer great Roger Maris. Other than Roger, my favorites were Bobby, Tony, Clete, and Elston. I grew up in Birmingham, Alabama, for context. I'm struggling to recall the outfield other than Roger and Mickey. And, Joe Pepitone at first base? Time fades the memory. Any help? At the time, my homework assignment was what I wanted to be when I grew up. My answer was a baseball player for the New York Yankees. My little league career lasted only two or three years because I was the worst player on the worst team in our league. But, my love of the game has never faded because the 1961 Yankees were forever etched in my brain.

I was a Chicago native, relocated to Saratoga Springs in February of 1986. I watched the Bears win Super Bowl right before I moved to NY. Then a year later, I watched the NY Giants win the Super Bowl. It was awesome, living in both places while watching each team win the Super Bowl. It was also awesome, listening to both the Bears and the Giants sing their “theme” songs! 😊

My Dad said that Dick Butkus was the greatest lineman that he's ever seen. He was a fearless intimidator on the field 20 yards in any direction. Dad added that Butkus's only flaw was that he played for the Bears and not for Dad's Colts. He's 90 now, just retired from driving rig 2 months ago. Works out a lot, strong constitution a very good working mind. And to this very DAY, Dad says that Dick Butkus is the greatest defensive player in NFL history.

I think Reginald Martinez Jackson should have been called out on that play. He just stood there and let it hit him.

If I remember right, the Yankees came back to win in six games, and Graig Nettles was outstanding on defense at third.

During the Packers dynasty of Vince Lombardi (1965, 66, 67) as the Head Coach, I often imagined what they would have done had they acquired Bill Brown in the draft he was in. Bill Brown, a fullback very similar in size, power, and guts as Jim Taylor. A Jim Taylor and Bill Brown backfield with Bart Starr at QB. Lombardi's power sweeps he was famous for, was great as they were. Not a thing against Horning or Donnie Anderson in the halfback positions. Just dreaming of the Lombardo power sweep around left or right-side of the line with Taylor carrying and Brown blocking or reverse ball carriers with Brown with the ball. Alas Brown went to the Bears his first year and then traded to the new NFL team, the Vikings the following season. Bill would remain with the Vikings, going into the 1970's.

As a linebacker in high school, I looked up to this badass boss so much. He played with so much pride and intensity which I commend. Butkus could give some brutal tackles and I’d watch and study him for hours. Rest In Peace to this legend 🏈
