Great video. I was thinking learning to develop 120 film and this convinced me. Once I learn that it'll be time to move up to 4x5.

It is a pretty weird thing to do. Detail in macro photography caught in a vise between diffraction and depth of field. It is very difficult to achieve high resolution and still have enough depth of field to make that high resolution worthwhile with some composition that could make sense. There is a long-standing dispute among product and macro photographers about resolution, like, does it make sense to buy a FF сcamera with 45 megapixels? And the answer is usually "well, if you do stacking - then, maybe ???". Because without stacking it is a choice between killing resolution via difraction and getting in focus just tiny amount of object.... Sooo I don't see how the large format can show its advantage here with it's....large format.

I keep doing this but there’s only one problem,I have to use a kettle to make the coffee dissolve and then I add the soda crystals and then vitamin c tablet crushed but here’s the error. I leave it in there for around 10 -15 minutes then I use lots of salt in a tub and mix it in that for 30 but then only one exposure come out very lightly. Anyone got tips????

I love also my Sinar! I have a p1 with the rails from the norma, the rail holder from a p2 and the frames of the p3 with a newly adapter plate for a Nikon Z… everything works well together 😊

A good honest review. I’ve played with a friends Intrepid and I hated it. I think the positive things are that it’s light weight and cheap. Photographers on a budget might be better off buying an old 8x10 such as a Burke and James, heavier but tried a tested. My first 8x10 was a B and J monorail which cost me £200 shipped from the USA to the U.K. years ago. Really bulky but very lightweight. I recommend my students look at the used market, with some patience a good used camera can be found at a reasonable price.

25 years ago I was a scanner operator. We used to scan larger and then reduce down. That gave us a great result. One thing you didn't touch on was wet scanning on the Epson. I would have liked to know how that compared.

This is the worst review. This guy is such a crybaby. He uses a camera and doesn't do any test shots and blames the company. It's a field camera! Grow up !

Hi, Mat! I like you passion for film and for your new toy! The excitement is contagious :) I am not into cinefilm, but if I were I would like to shoot sync sound. It revolutionized how docos, news and even feature movies were filmed in the 1960s. I like the look of coax magazines. Something like an Eclair would be nice to play with. Digital storage has become so cheap and capacious, it is no contest. At 24 Mbps a 64 GB card would hold 6 hours of footage. And it costs like $10. And no need for processing.

My LF journey started with an Intrepid Mark I 4x5. Ive struggled with focus with it but after a few years of not using it I decided to get back in the saddle. I took it with me to Prince Edward Island this summer and an attempting to learn the zone system. I'm excited to get back and get into the darkroom and see what I get.

I blame me for the focus by the way, not the camera. I'm still as green as a #11 filter at this point.

I got the bug 😅 Was working with the Arri 65mm and 435 I’m now very interested in film. Thinking to maybe start with 16mm… maybe 35 but figured it would be an easier jump than 35.

I’m curious, what is the approximate exposure time for a platinum/palladium print with this light box? I’d love to make this box if the lights are strong enough for a reasonable exposure time. Thanks!!!

Great video. Could you please give some further advice how you wired up the Arri plug to the barrel plug adapter? The Arri plug has a bigger and a smaller connector. So I’m wondering which of the two needs the be wired to the tip and which to the ring of the barrel plug connector? Thank you

Mat a warning to everyone about the sinar Vario backs, as part of the Rules of thumb; Read the manuals of the film backs, I just shot a roll of 120 Gold 200 in 6x12 but did a mistake, I Wound on straight after the counter said to switch to "EXP.", DON'T, when the exp. shows SWITCH the lever over...STOP, take your FIRST shot!!, then WIND up, to shot TWO, this one cost me the first exposure, got the other 5 thank goodness, the 6x12 has 6 exposures, all worked ok after, NO problems leaving a roll in 3 weeks straight, no film flatness issues. The manual isn't quite clear on the markings, so as above, fire as soon as the lever is switched over to EXP. and as soon as you see the RED triangle of the colour change and the word 'LOAD', ITS SAFE to wind-off, no more shots left. just be carefull if this is LOADED with film, as that EXP/LOAD lever arms/trips the counter system[to wind off a partly shot roll], so store it safe, so nothing can touch it!!

I have a rule 5,6&7, 5) Always test fire the shot, and do 'idiot checks' , to see if the shutter speed is correct, Lens is closed, movements and tripod head locked down, slide out, metered correctly (while setting up has the light changed?); 6) Practice, esp. with new gear, film loading, packing gear (what bag for what shoot)-for ease of moving around; 7) if you get something new, use 120 film to test it!, for light leaks, or a film stock, I have wasted enough film to know, use cheap SIZE to see if you like it, then by all means go full sheet, so you KNOW you use it, and it gives the look you like. 8) {bonus}Also if in DOUBT USE lens shades, or an ND filter, these formats are GLARE sensitive, so be carefull, know what light you are going into, and what your film/s can take.

great intro to lf lenses mat; but another major consideration you didn't mention is the Lens board and shutter size/type, to fit on the camera, also the filter thread on the front element; I got a Fujinon SWD 65 f5.6 and was lucky, it has a 67mm thread, so with adaptors, a Kase K-9 100mm filter system can fit!, other sizes, you need a custom filter solution, like the rod based one you showed on the Sinar P2 video, which adapt to the camera, not the lens, like the compendium shade brackets, OR use inner screw on filters, which attach directly to the rear of the front glass element, or the front of the rear element.

Thanks for the videos, Mat. I use a Toyo 810M field camera and make portraits outdoors, very quickly, usually under stress. I need a new tripod head and tripod, and have a chance to get an Arca Swiss Cube very inexpensively, or a Majestic head. All things being equal pricewise, which would you recommend? Thanks! Mark

I can't do math but I'm wondering if anyone has made a DIY job of the latter film plane meters? Like the large format back would allow a normal lightmeter to be put inside, you'd just need a remote way to trigger or even sacrifice a meter, put the receptor inside and the wired body outside to take a reading?

I take indoor shots with my 8 x 10 pinhole using direct positive paper. Exposure time around 9 hours. Sometimes I start the exposure when I go to bed so the camera will start the exposure at first light. Worth the effort but just remember to take the lens cap off.😃😃😃

There was an earlier version called the bag back. There was an actually a bag connected to the back. You would have to manually remove the septum by pulling it into the bag and slip it under the unexposed septum. Wierd, but it worked.

No, that darkslide is not literally cut in half. You have to cut less than half, otherwise the two images you shoot on the same piece of film will touch.

my film back actually got stuck on and it's not letting me insert the dark slide to remove it. the shutter is working but its not reading the film back (shutter count) I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to remove the film back without inserting the dark slide - like a hard reset manually?!?
