I met Butch a couple of times, once with my nephew at the Blue Note 15 or so years ago. My nephew played the drums and the trumpet. I made the introduction. Butch came off the stage after playing with the Basie Band, and he said, laughing, all wet, "You want to do this? Play the trumpet." And then he gave the 15 or so kid tips. Hell of a guy.
