I have been in the CPA game for a long time now. I majored in accounting because I knew I could get a job in the field after graduation. Graduated. Joined a Big 6 firm like I was programmed to by my professors. Worked four years there and hated every minute of it. So, I then moved into a Fortune 500 position as I thought it would be easier. Better life balance, etc. Wrong. We were publicly traded and basically worked every day during January/February so we could make investors and upper management happy or mad about that year's results. I kept up with my hours for one week and one week only during this period. I calculated how much I made per hour that week and realized I would have been better off working at a fast food joint. I wish I was joking about this, but I'm dead serious. I made the mistake of staying in the game too long as life happens. I got married, had a child, got a big house in the suburbs, etc. Once that happened, I basically was a slave to the grind. I applaud you for realizing you needed to get out before it began to destroy you as a person. I wish you much success and happiness as you progress with your plans. One last thing. My now 19 year old daughter is a sophomore in college in the Bay Area of San Francisco. She's not considering majoring in accounting. Yes, I think she actually listened to me in her last couple of years in high school. If she hadn't, I would be twice as worried about her as I am. Again, great video and I hope you continue making them for people who are thinking about majoring in accounting. And again, best wishes for your future.

What state are you in? Some states don't even break down what type of cpe to do. Lol. You usually just have to do 40 hours a year generally.

I have 2 years of accounting experience since i graduated and I already realized that i don't want to ki** myself for a employer. it is never good enough, always more work more tasks more everything. I am in the private sector, never tried public but heard it is even more demanding so i will stick to private but i am already having a mid career crisis. it is so boring, trying to find the right balance and def want my own business

Which tax subservice line? Some subservice lines get higher compensation than others. International tax, for example, get paid more.

I have been an auditor for the big 4 and mid sized firms and now an accountant. I hate these jobs, I find myself staring at the wall contemplating my life, for average pay. I also have an MBA but I just don’t know where to go from here? The accounting pay is not great at the moment compared to other professions considering the amount of stress and hours you are put through

This is so informative. It gives people who are interested in the field a sneak peek into what a market analyst does in this role. I do have a question for yoir guest: what was yhe source to find out that the real users of the product were the daughters in one of her examples? I thought Google Analytics does not collect that.

Hey jen thanks for the informative video ! I'm going to be majoring in accounting and had a question. When I work in public accounting fur 2-3 years and get my CPA, would I be able to work seasonally for 4 months as a contractor then take time off ? I've read that some accountants work for the Big 4 or other firms using contractors during the busy season. How common is this and is it always busy every year where one can find a 4-5 month contract ? Thanks.

Accounting to me feels so lonely, i feel like theres rarely interaction/talking needed between the team. Im going into inside sales, pay is around the same. I guess if you have your CPA , you hve an opportunity to make more than sales, but too monotonous.

I’ve been a CPA for about 7 years now (3 years in public and 4 years private) and I’ve noticed the more I commit my entire existence to work, the less stressed I am/I start to find work kind of enjoyable… but the second I start trying to have expectations for a personal life, I immediately become stressed and depressed about being in this unforgiving profession. I really need to figure something out before it’s too late.
