Fagen is singing with Carolyn Leonhart. That's her father Jay playing bass. I'm sorry I don't know the guitar player.

DF doesn't have a great voice in the classical sense, but they made the most of it through the layered vocals, backup vocals, overall production and recording process, particularly in the now classic studio recordings. While I like the sound of the songs that David Palmer did lead vocals on CBAT, Fagen's vocals became, and still are, the essential element of the Steely Dan sound. The songs just aren't the same without DF's vocals. And that is all on top of being a bona fide musical genius with unsurpassed talent when it comes to songwriting, composition, arrangements, etc.

Jazz purists: we should boycott Donald Fagen’s induction into the jazz hall of fame! Jazz purists: what? Only a fool would say that.

By Donald’s standards this was a mess. It’s also brilliant. Discuss.

He was put here for a purpose and this is it. I was a 17 year old high school senior, straight ahead rock fan until I bought Can’t Buy a Thrill in ‘73, i have to admit strictly on the basis of the cover art. Whatever. Anyway as I got into this I heard totally unfamiliar chords and phrasing in a sort of rock like song. Those chords my god those chords, they struck right through me and added such a level of pleasant complexity. It was perfect, exactly what I’d been looking for but didn’t know I was looking for anything. 20 or so years later they started touring again, I went to the concert in The Woodlands. As we were getting to our seats the audio system started playing loud, and THOSE CHORDS!!! Shit! Then Larry Carlton’s chording on some song, I don’t remember which but I do still recall to this day the awesome power behind the it and loud as heck, to hear those sweet complex chords played in an outside amphitheater setting, well I had to choke back tears for 15 minutes. That’s how grateful I am to have experienced Becker/Fagen in my age of enlightenment. To this day, 50 years after the first album, when I play an SD album or song I have to stop whatever I am doing so I can close my eyes and give it the attention it deserves, in my case that means all of my attention. Thank God for SD and Becker/Fagen. Sorry for writing a book I couldn’t help it.

Oh me too! Love love love steely Dan. Both so gifted, smart, talented and nonconformist, bending the rules to accommodate their art the way they wanted to craft it, so much admiration. Plus Don is a sexy mfer. The big brain is irresistible.
