I certainly can't take credit for the idea, that's how a bunch of shifters work basically. I just made that one myself and hooked it to a transmission that probably has never and will never again have a remote shifter like that put on it.

It's 2 degrees of negative camber on the front wheels. The idea behind the car is to have something that'd be a lot of fun on tracks whether those be small tight road courses or autocross courses. The camber is there to increase the front grip while turning.

Surely that 60's Jeep six is overhead valve, not OHC?
@s13blue240sx
@s13blue240sx 4 ай бұрын
It is definitely overhead cam, and just about the strangest way of doing it you can imagine, with only a single wide cam lobe per cylinder and ball mounted rocker arms that are held straightish on the cam lobs by a finger plate that fits in the stamped rockers and is sandwiched between the cam towers and valve cover to be held in place. And the whole job was technically a modification of a flathead inline six that apparently traces its roots back to gas engined farm tractors.

Bit of a long story, short version is it was pulled out to do an engine swap in a Jeep and I thought it looked cool. Told the owner of that my idea and he let me have it. No internal modification done to the engine, working on getting the blower plumbed in still. Did do the exhaust, using the factory points distributor to trigger an MSD box and it has a bigger oil pan with an external cooler.

Beutifull conatruccion, congratulations!!! Here, in Argentina, the Tornado Engine was used in sport cars, like the IKA Torino (IKA its for Industrias Kaiser Argentina). That engine was modified in factory, extensively used in many cars and trucks, like the Rambler Classic and Ambassador line, the Jeep line, Gladiator, Torino 380 (2 doors 3.8Lts) and Torino 300 (3.0Lts 4 doors) etc. One of these modification was a 12 port head. This engines came from 145hp to 215hp, in factory settings. I'm own a 1965 Rambler Ambassador with this engine. Modded from 3.8Lts (230Cu.In.) to 4.287cc (260Cu.In.). And 225hp and 41kg/m of torque with standard cam and 7.5:1 RC, with the ¨Tornado Interceptor¨ head, the 12 ports denomination. The 8 port head, like US Jeep Tornado´s here it´s called ¨Tornado Jet¨. Perhaps, you can find engine parts of better performance here, it's a very common engine to us, and with the relation of change betwin U$ and Argentine $ (ARG$200=U$1) you can find a 12 port head, with increesed flow and performance, complete with valves, springs, etc for about ARG $10.000 (U$500), ready to run in perfect condition, like a cero mileage. Well, greetings and waiting for more videos of you proyect!!!

Very nice project! I have one of this engine with 3 weber carbs on my Torino. There are some upgrades tha Ika performed on this engine. Apparently they had lubrication problems with the camshaft... there are 4 differente models of camshaft support and 3 different models of camshaft (I believe the cam profile is the same. Mosta changes are related to lubrication). And two different models of rocker and the metal sheet that hold them in position. In the other hand, the cast of the cylinder head of most tornado's here is different. You have 6 intake separately ducts. I thnk the shape of the cylinder head inside is the same. Finaly the modified the whole engine and made a 7 main bearing crank with an independant lobe camshaft. This engine was called Torino.

It seems somewhat a shame that this engine was essentially given up on in the United States back in the day but it was rather inevitable given the appetite for V8s at the time. While somewhat a struggle to find English Language information about them in the United States there is some documentation of the work IKA and Renault did over the years down south, and an inkling of continued reverence for it still in Argentina while it is practically unknown and completely unloved up here.

I grew up with a 73 Catalina, learned to drive in it, passed my drivers test in it. One thing about these beasts, they could handle despite their size, rode well, very easy to drive. Even if you got the smaller 350, it had shorter gearing, so it still got you going with no sweat. Gas mileage? Not so much. Maybe 8 city, 12-14 highway. Would love to have one again.

I've told several people that about the handling. Everybody expects it to just be a giant floaty boat of a car because of it's size but they were much more firmly suspended than you would think and the front sway bar is gigantic.

Was it originally a 4 speed? My understanding was that nearly all of the commercially sold vehicles had a column shift three speed. I know the military M716 had the four speed. At the same time there was also the four speed with electronic overdrive that was available in the rare 2wd trucks.

Here in Argentina the Tornado engine was in production until 1982. In '75 it was redesigned here, with a new head, new cam, different and wider exhaust, 7 main bearings instead of 4 and two webber carburetors. We raced 84 hours of Nurburgring and made laps records, they made roughly 9500km. This in a modified Rambler American, called IKA Torino.

They started the overhead camshaft on the 1963&1/2 series. A lot of those Jeeps burnt up. If you look, you will see that the fuel pump is above the distributor. When a fuel pump leaks fuel, it runs down on to the distributor where there is 3 sparks per revolution! Gas fires are hot enough to melt aluminum! Once it gets to that point, it is especially difficult to put out! My neighbor has a Jeep pickup with the OHC motor, and 4 speed on the tree! Only 4 on the tree that I have ever seen! Except for IHC trucks. Hello from north east Montana. 10 miles from the Canadian border.

I haven't tried to do much more with it tuning wise. I suspect the head pipes are probably just a bit big and causing some reversion in addition to being rich on overrun.
