Douglas MacArthur is one of the most overrated generals in American history: At the Philippines he suffered a defeat that is considered "the greatest in the history of American foreign wars" after which he fled for his life (not before melodramatically promising "I shall return" for the newspapers, after which the Pentagon asked him to change his statement to "we shall return" to include the entire American military which he refused as he wanted to be the only liberator of the Philippines and he'd also pretend to refuse to leave the Philippines melodramatically proclaiming he'd "share the fate of the garrison" which is now known to be just an act to look heroic, brave and stoic as he knew full well the government would never allow such a high-ranking officer to surrender) and during his life in Australia after he fled and after his return to the Philippines MacArthur was more concerned with photo ops (especially taking pictures trying to look manly and tough with giant pipes or when he returned to the Philippines and took great care of including many photographers whom he instructed and positioned carefully so that they'd take picture of him disembarking and walking melodramatically towards the coast), creating self-serving propaganda flattering to himself and meddling in politics than with actual fighting. And he was also narcissistic and petty as shown by his relationship with Wendell Fertig who was everything MacArthur wasn't: Apolitical, sincerely concerned with the wellbeing of his subordinates, humble and tactically successful and a strategic genius; Fertig was one of the most successful guerilla commanders in history, when MacArthur was considering how to fit as many of his valuables and friends as possible in the boats in which he fled Fertig was refusing to leave the Philippines and stayed behind in the jungle to fight alongside his Filipino soldiers which he never abandoned and which he led to victory; however, despite all of his achievements, he never even received the Medal of Honor and was never promoted to General, which would have been customary for a man with his exploits and which had been awarded to men with lesser achievemens, this didn't happen because MacArthur blocked all attempts at rewarding Fertig because he was jealous of him and because he wanted to be seen as the only liberator of the Philippines (and even disobeyed direct orders more than once such as when he was ordered to liberate Luzon but after this was done, on his own initiative he moved to other bigger islands but he picked the easiest and less defended ones; in fact, disobeying orders in attempts to increase his glory and popularity was what got him relieved of command during the Korean War); in other words, he wanted all fame and glory to himself and was perfectly willing to rob a deserving man of his hard-earned glory in order to aggrandize himself; in fact, during the war MacArthur blocked aid and reinforcements to Wertig in the hopes that he'd be defeated or humilliated, that's how disgusting petty, vindictive and disgusting MacArthur was.

There are soooo much misrepresentation, omission, misinformation and lies about the Korean war. There were only 325,000 Chinese in NK against 715,000 US and UN forces. Those 200k Chinese did not just fought the marines. The Chinese fought and defeated/routed a force of at least 115,000 which includes the entire X Corp + the 1st Div Marines + 7th ID + ROK I Corp forces in the East. Every documentary about the Chosin battle always make seems like it was just the 20K marines battling the entire Chinese in the entire North Korean war. They hardly mention the 8th Army in the east Chongchong battle being routed by a far lesser Chinese force of half starve, half frozen ill-equipped.

so it;s irrelevent to whats the battle is going on here? We should also talk about that in total the chinese has a way bigger army than the UN and US combined and yet still lose more troops. Even the most "non-biase" historians on youtube apparently agrees with that

@@just_a_casual_viewer Then let me be the first to tell you and everyone else who want the truth!. they lied to us. So you don't believe their lies. The truth came out, although its buried at the bottom of all reports. The US/UN forces were defeated by a smaller Chinese force, less equipped, no tanks, jet planes, bombers, napalm warships. They US lied to justify their defeat and retreat by claiming their were larger 325k Chinese a small 20,000 American marines. When in actuality the US/UN far out numbered the PVA in men and materials.

I've been visiting the Somme battlefields for c30 years, gradually forming an imperfect understanding of this complex campaign....so am seriously delighted to find this excellent animated video which helps me to better visualise and understand the overall progress of the battle. I'm sure I'll be returning to rewatch and further absorb this excellent work many, many times. Congratulations snd much thanks for the skill and dedication in creating this impressive work. Hugely appreciated!👏👏👏

In this battle was the greatest evacuation of all times in the Korean War. While the Chinese won to reclaim the resorvoir, the U.S. Troops still proved a superior force. Laying traps and delaying tactics against the numerically superior Chinese soldiers and the Chinese failed to destroy them.

As a Marine who’s heard terrible stories about the Army, it’s difficult to look at the 31st RCT without some prejudice because we believe we are the best. However, the messaging among the Marines, who answered to a cautious and well-prepared OP Smith, was one of measured confidence and an understanding that the Chinese were present and in significant numbers. They were well prepared for the fight. The Army’s messaging, however, came from Almond and MacArthur whose hubris inspired overconfidence as well as a belief that the Chinese were not involved in any meaningful way. Poor leadership from the flag-officer level was the sole cause of the destruction of the RCT…not a fundamental difference between Army soldiers and Marines.
@antique7391
@antique7391 Жыл бұрын
Well I agree. RCT-31 unlike the Marine Division was a Adhoc group thrown together. General Almond was an old school Southern General who had as much scorn for Chinese soldiers as he had for African American Troops. He worshipped MacArthur. The Chinese General in charge of the East Side of Chosin made interesting comments years later. That RCT-31 inflicted enough casualties and confusion to the Chinese 80th Division that its sacrifice helped save the American Marine Division. Furthermore,if the Chinese could have done it over they would have ignored RCT-31 and attacked Hagaru-ri and killed O.P Smith overrunning the Marine Division CP….before the Division could consolidate..

An all too common mistake is to not put your ego aside. Don't underestimate your opponent. And don't overestimate your own skills. The bare bones of the matter is, put aside all the advanced military equipment , the Chinese soldier was superior. Fighting with outdated rifles , no air support, they won the battle. Too bad almond thought these were just laundry men. The laundry men kicked his butt .

The comments in this video are adequate for an introduction into the fighting in and around the Chosin Reservoir. Although some of the numbers the author offers are a bit skewed. The total number of Chinese is suspect, especially after they close in at Hungnam. Over 90,000 Koreans were evacuated from Hungnam along with the UN Forces. If there were 200,000 Koreans at the docks at that time, they would have been blown up during the destruction of the port. See the book "To the Last Man" by Major Franklin Kestner. There are a few books that I would offer if a reader wanted to take a deep dive in the Korean War's Chosin Reservoir fighting. I list them in order of importance and a logical progression in order to understand the full scope. Clay Blair's book The Forgotten War-research and validation points. Major Ent's book, "Fighting on the Brink" a solid time line of the beginnings of the Korean War Colonel George Rasula's "The Changjin Chronology" A timeline of the Chosin Campaign Roy E. Appleman's "East of Chosin; Entrapment and Breakout in Korea" Revealing questions asked about the Chosin campaign. Ray Vallowe's book, "What History Failed to Record; A phantom force lost to history" Some Questions answered about the Chosin Billy Mossman's book "Ebb and Flow" Martin Russ' book "Breakout; The Chosin Reservoir Campaign" Bob Drury and Tom Clavin's book "The Last Stand of Fox Hill" Roy E. Appleman's book "South to Naktong North to Yalu" Hampton Side's book "On Desperate Ground". Major Franklin Kestner's book "To the Last Man; Kulbis' Mongrels at the Chosin Reservoir" autobiographical at Chosin. A few of these are downloadable for free on the internet. But there are many, many more. Each one brings nuggets of events into the Korean conflict.
