Could you do a video of finding the equation?
@choerm7 ай бұрын
My friend, you might want to set your videos to unlisted and just share these links to your students. Don't know why, but Google thought it was a great idea to recommend these to an old-ass engineer like me. Who knows what random person will come along next. Best wishes and MATH RULES!
@doublehickam63897 ай бұрын
As you say MATH RULES, so why not share with the world is my thought. 85% of my videos are viewed and used by others who are not my students, so I leave them out there for all to use and learn. Glad to hear from another who enjoys the amazing world of mathematics.

I read it as “if a dog was tied to snake…” And figured out the solution pretty quickly. That’s all mathematics is - changing a few letters and numbers to make the solution work.
@RexxSchneider8 ай бұрын
Nope. After 42 laps the dog has covered just less than 5,278 feet, which is at least 2 feet short of a mile. Read the question "how many full laps to run a mile?" and the answer is 43 full laps are needed. The question is designed to catch out folks who round to the closest (42 laps) just like you did.
@doublehickam63898 ай бұрын
You have a point, but I made the question, so…
@doublehickam63898 ай бұрын
I will make note of the use of the word "full" in tomorrow's class, so thanks for the input.
@RexxSchneider8 ай бұрын
@@doublehickam6389 Well, if you have to teach a more advanced class sometime. it would make a good introduction to the floor() and ceiling() functions. It's interesting how close 1680π is to 5280, being just 0.04% short! (I know, the ratio 5280/1680 is 22/7, but that shows how good an approximation it is for π)
@pietergeerkens63248 ай бұрын
@@RexxSchneider I do prefer 355/113 as an approximation, of course.
@junkertom77668 ай бұрын
I would have failed this test - noone that is used to the metric system will remember how many x fits into y imperial units. 5280 ft in a mile? Give me a break.
@doublehickam63898 ай бұрын
Metric is far superior and you will notice that most problems I do are in metric; however, American students are used to these units over metric.

Interesting thoughts, but let’s assume it’s like most dog tethers; hence, the rope doesn’t wrap around the post.
@ghuito82028 ай бұрын
This applies in case of the rope being loose enough at the post, or the post rotates as the dog runs the laps. Or else, every lap the dog makes, the rope gets curled over and over around the post, decreasing the dog's distance from the post, which also affects the distance the dog travels each lap, making it impossible for the dog to complete a mile. Also, the post's diameter and the rope's diameter would now need to be factored in.

what if I have two fields one says Pay-in and one says pay-out. how could I make a 3rd field add or subtract the first two and determine whether there was a gain or loss?
@doublehickam63898 ай бұрын
Are you talking fields like pivot tables or are you simply having two columns with one that is Pay-in and one column that is Pay-out and numbers are in individual cells?

Large arc length - small arc length and divide by 2 = outside angle, is a pretty valuable formula 👍🏼
@MightyBiffer9 ай бұрын
I really have a problem with you stating that -6 isn't one of the excluded values. The equation is a one fraction divided by a second fraction. We solve it by inverting the second fraction and multiplying the two together. But if we exclude the -6 as being an excluded number, then we are allowing the equation to have one number divided by an undefined number. That makes the equation nonsensical.
@doublehickam63899 ай бұрын
You bring up an interesting point, and I discuss this with the students whom I teach. I used to have students list it, and never count it wrong if they do, but if you take that equation and go graph it, you will see that x = -6 is in the domain. Not until this year did I even point that out to students. Thanks for your feedback, and I hope you enjoy the other videos I try to produce.

Hello Mr.Hickam!! I’d like to give you an account suggestion! I noticed you have a lot of helpful videos, but they’re not organized in playlists. I think it’d be really neat if you could have an Algebra playlist will all your videos about it. A Geometry playlist, a Google Sheets playlist, and so on. I just think it’d be lots of help to those trying to learn, and also your channel would look more organized! Thank you so much for your videos !! They’ve always saved me , but scrolling for specific videos has always been a challenge 😅
@doublehickam6389 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion. I actually have everything organized on my website www.mathintheusa.com which is what my students use to get to these videos. Check it out, and I will consider your playlist idea. Thank you!
