When I replaced the batteries, the memory had stored what I did last year !! Great unit!! But your help has me in the driver's seat again. Thanks too for showing a copy of the manual.

I am not an expert on the flowers. But I did have some pollination issues last year with Zucchini. My best advice would be to plant multiple plants going forward if you can. So there are better chances of male and female flowers open at the same time.

I'm not sure why your mother plants are dying after you plant runners. The mother plant should live for many seasons. Some varieties the mother plant will eventually producing less and less berries. But that would take multiple seasons. As for death, I am not sure why that is happening to your plants.

@mikesyarden3187

It's your choice, if you for sure want extra strawberry plants, I would wait. If you are ok risking the daughters plants dying you could cut now. Runners can die if you cut the link to the mother plant too early, so be aware of that. After 2 weeks of root formation in the soil the new daughters plants should be fine to be cut though.

Do you deal with the vine borers bugs growing vertically?
@DangitLacie

You would still have to keep an eye out for vine borers, but! It will be easier to manage this way. You'll be able to see eggs earlier on and you could inject BT at the base as a preventative if you've gone past egg-squishing stage.

What soaker hose do you recommend? Thank you!
@mikesyarden3187
@mikesyarden3187 Жыл бұрын
I don't have a specific brand I recommend. I suggest going to your local garden center and getting a good quality soaker hose, good quality ones will be thick walled, metal connectors and be more expensive. If you get a decent quality one, it will have even water distribution throughout the hose and be tough enough to last many seasons

Saw some people doing this with theirs and getting good results. I started doing it also; plants seem to stay healthier and are overall easier to manage and harvest. I think if you do it from the start and make sure to be consistent, the fear of snapping a stem is less relevant than having to bend or train a vine to start growing vertically once it's already vined over. These plants get so heavy once they're adults lol
@mikesyarden3187

@@cheesekake1841 Stick a sturdy stake in the ground at least a foot or two deep. Right beside the plant, you can do it now. Make sure you don't damage the plant when you do this. Then start attaching the main stem to the stake. Be careful when doing this, you don't want to snap off the stem.

Do you really need to bury the hose? Wouldn't mulch give you protection from evaporation? Seems like a lot of extra work you might not need to do.
@mikesyarden3187
@mikesyarden3187 Жыл бұрын
You don't need to bury them. But the sun will slowly damage the hoses over a long period of time and that's 1 reason why they should be buried, especially if they would be in direct sun for most of the day. Mulch would give me protection from evaporation as well, and that's what I would do for a flower garden. But this is my vegetable garden and I don't want mulch in it because of the large chunks of wood in mulch.
