I doubt that the soap block you put in there is sufficient. In all likely hood it will crack.
@darkflux Жыл бұрын
realistically, if that is going to be a PERMANENT structure, you should have dug down to SOLID dirt (or clay) and poured concrete in the hole (at least 1 cubic foot). hopefully, you will just REPLACE those joists that "didn't go all the way" with joists that DO go all the way. sistering joists is almost always the best way to go for a permanent fix of that problem. either way, you are SUPPOSED to affix the top and bottom of the posts with screws/bolts, so that it doesn't move sideways with the weight. THAT is why that was done with the timber. as bad as it was tilting at the bottom, you can see why they would screw it in at the top. even though that bottom piece was poorly done, at least they did the top right, which is why it was still in place, and not laying on the floor...

Thanks Jacob, Glad it can help you. It's a crapy job but as a fairly new homeowner myself I now know what to look for and what not in a house moving forward. but this has helped stop drafts and keep the basement warmer for low cost and not having to hire out to $$$$$$ people.

I am looking to do this in my own crawlspace. Are you not worried about termites? Does your area require a termite inspection gap at the top? It looks good!
@AaronCzarnecki4 жыл бұрын
Termites? Nope, not really. if that's the case I will fix the outside with bug replant and other deterrents to keep them away on inside as well as outside. Not sure about the inspection thing but I didn't see any signs of stress on the wood. Just Age. Hope this helps. Thanks for the view.

They make termite resistant foam board. I've been researching this to because I'm about to do an encapsulation on my crawlspace.
@frankmc260211 күн бұрын
Code is to keep the top of any vapor barrier or insulation minimum of three (3) inches below the sill plate. That way a termite inspector can see any termite channel making it's way to the wood structure --and treat accordingly.

The adjustment screw is supposed to go on the bottom. Just an FYI. They are designed to be lifted from the bottom.. good explanation for the general jist though. Did you have a radiation leak in your crawlspace ? That's a serious suit 😂..just kidding. Good informational video
@darkflux Жыл бұрын
it doesn't HAVE to go that way (with the bigger side up top and screw on the bottom). that really only matters if you have larger joists, but since he didn't screw it in place (as it says in the manual), it's actually BETTER that the more stable side is on the bottom. i've seen even the pros do it either way, depending on the situation.
