How did you get the vacuum gauge to work? My gauge does not move when I turn on my vacuum.

This is so helpful. Thank you! I am having a problem, never used a pugmill before. My new vpm7 won’t pug. The vacuum is working perfectly. The clay is stuck around the shaft end next to the vacuum chamber. I loaded it up with about 15lbs as you suggested. There is lots of room left because it’s all wadded up towards the vacuum end of the clay chamber. Some clay and water leaked back into the vacuum chamber. I’m afraid to add more clay since it already went into the vacuum chamber, and the manual says that is caused by too much clay. I have repeatedly pushed the clay back down around the auger and towards the pug end, but it just ends up wadded up at the other end, leaving most of the clay chamber empty. I just left it shut without venting it, hoping the 15lbs of clay in there won’t dry up before I can call Peter Pugger for help on Monday when they open. So frustrated!

What did you do to remedy your vacuum issue. I'm having the same trouble with my new Peter Pugger.

Hi Wendy. I have found that pushing on the front panel of the vacuum chamber and pressing down on the handle just seals them that little bit more, to allow the vacuum to build up. Hope this helps.

Hi! I've been using my Peter Pugger for about 6 months now and I have to say I love it. It's saved me so much money. I've not bought any new clay since I got the machine as I had 10 years of scrap bagged up. Just wanted to share my top tip that I stumbled on in the last couple of weeks. I'm sure you've come across the frustration of trying to stop the motor at just the right point that the auger paddles are out of the way so you have full access to the chamber to fill it up. So you have to keep stopping and starting to find the sweet spot. I've found that when you get that perfect spot you can take a marker pen (ideally one of those CD markers) and just put a line on the spindle between the back of the motor and the control box you can simply watch for the line coming round and hit stop, it stops in the place you want it each and every time. Happy pugging!

Hi Gary, great to hear from you with an update. I’m so glad you’re enjoying your machine. Do you mean marking the spindle inside the vacuum chamber? That’s a great idea! I might have to do that myself. I otherwise try to do it ‘by ear’ once I’ve figured out the revolutions, but your way is much less ‘hit and miss’.

@@mokapottery Not inside the vacuum chamber itself, just to the right of it. The last little bit of the spindle pokes out the end of the vacuum chamber between that and the control box. That way it keeps clean so you can always see the line. :)

The beauty of the de-airing vacuum pump is that it removes the air, meaning no kneading is required. I put my fresh bags through too, just to make sure they are ready to use.

Hi Gary. Yes I'm delighted with it. My only reservation is that in hindsight I could have used the slightly bigger VPM-9. But I chose to get extrusion dies etc with the difference in price to stay within my budget and they are invaluable. So if you can stretch to the VPM-9, go for it.

@@kathgibson Thanks so much. I was going to buy the VPM-7 Stainless Steel version. But Just as I was going to buy it from Scarva I had a notification that someone had listed used VPM-7 on eBay So I jumped on that. Perfect condition. I picked it up on Saturday and I love it already! I see what you mean about the size, but I have 10 years worth of scrap that I knew I would never get round to reclaiming by hand (seriously cannot move in my studio). Once that is all sorted I can't see me needing more than maybe 1 batch a week so I'm happy with the size. I think I'm too going to use the spare budget on dies. I was so lucky to get one used they NEVER come up on eBay!

Would love to see it in use - I see that video is coming up “soon”? Lol. I also wondered about the extruded dies and how they work. The handle ones have several slots in each, how do you stop all the extruded lengths from sticking together?

I promise, it IS coming. 🤣 I have some footage from our old studio where the unboxing was filmed, but I need to do more now that we are finally set up in our new studio. Then I need to make some time for editing and we are doing some work in our shop before we reopen after lockdown (in Scotland) at the end of April, and still find time to make new stock for the shop! So there’s lots going on, and I’m planning on doing more videos on lots of subjects, so bear with us, we will get part 2 to you soon!

Apparently ‘soon’ is today 🤣 Thanks for the nudge. I didn’t realise, until I started editing, that I had all the footage I needed. Now just need to film the extruding video.

Hi Carl. Realised I had the mixing and Pugging bit filmed, just not the extruding, so that’s now edited and uploaded for you. Won’t be long now till yours comes!

Do you have any videos showing this in use? How much will the hopper hold? I'm thinking of getting the VPM-7 and just wondering if you find it adequate for your needs?

Hi Leigh. I am planning a follow up at some point showing it in use and also using the extruder dies. We had planned to do this just after we filmed this one, but then we moved premises and the clay room is still being organised. Hopefully get to it soon.

Oh... and the hopper is fine for day to day reclaiming as you go but if you have large quantities of reclaim to get through, or you plan to also use it as an extruder on a regular basis, you might want to consider the VPM-9 if budget allows. I get around 4-5 hollow tubes from one hopper of clay. That’s enough for me to make 12 tumblers/mugs.
@snarlla

Thanks so much for your reply. That is exactly the information I needed. I've been reclaiming by slaking and plaster drying, so just looking for small scale reclaiming with good mixing.
