Good point, knight back to e2 would have to be played - though this would make Bf4 stronger too. I guess castling first followed by Nf4 was a better option then.

Thanks! It was really cool to be able to play out the trap I set in an OTB game, my opponent thought I blundered and played g4 to trap my bishop pretty quickly, but the look of shock on his face when I quickly responded with Ne5 is something I will remember.

what would you say calculating is like in your mind? do you visualise the pieces in the squares, if you do how clearly do you see them in your mind or do you just conceptualise where the pieces are without having a clear visual picture
@MagnusChessUK
@MagnusChessUK 2 күн бұрын
Yes I would say that I visualise the pieces moving in my mind’s eye, it is not clear like playing the moves out but similar to closing your eyes and imagining and apple for example. I didn’t used to be able to do this when playing but calculation exercises and practicing blindfold chess really helped develop my mind’s eye visualisation. Alternatively you can just make a mental note of the changes and square control in the position if you are struggling to visualise, I often do this for shorter and more chaotic calculations, while having mind’s eye visualisation for longer calculations/planning (e.g. a King and pawn endgame race).

That’s okay! If you’re struggling with clear plans try playing an opening with more open files (like the Scotch) where price placement is more obvious. Then you should make less mistakes!

what do you think is the best way to get better at non-theoretical endgames
@MagnusChessUK
@MagnusChessUK 7 күн бұрын
I’ll make a video on this separately, but you can actually use many of the tips from this video like piece improvement and attacking weaknesses. Though more specifically you should learn principals for each of the endgame types, like rooks going behind past pawns, queens centralised, same coloured bishop endgames with pawns on opposite colour to bishop etc. Once you have learned many different principles from endgame types the best thing you can do is gain experience against other players in those endgames!

On lichess for openings I think important to reference how people in your rating band play in addition to masters... too many courses like chessable focus only on GM level lines...
@MagnusChessUK
@MagnusChessUK Ай бұрын
Yeah which is why it’s important to analyse your games with an engine afterwards to personalise how to play against your opponents mistakes. Though the lichess rating band tool is also pretty useful!
