This lesson explains the differences between indefinite and definite articles. Some languages such as Urdu and Hindi do not use articles, so native speakers of these languages tend to drop the articles in English. How and when the articles such as 'a', 'an', and 'the' are used is made clear through examples, exercises, and quizzes. I hope you will enjoy and lesson. If you have any requests for special lessons, please ask, and I will create them for your reference.

@@AandLofficial0916 Andy, there are two errors in your post: a local and a global error. Unlike Spanish, English is not a pro-drop language. In other words, there must be a noun or pronoun in the subject position. "Is honorable reading your response" is acceptable in Spanish because native speakers can and do drop the subject, but it's a global error in English, as the reader wonders what "is honorable". So, "it" is used as a null subject. "It's honorable reading...." is grammatically correct. Also, there is a comma splice in your response, which is a global error. Can you identify and rectify the error? Also, please watch the latest lesson on the difference between 'may' and 'might' and do not hesitate to ask if you have any questions. Hi. This is a transcript from a video. I have a couple of questions. First, the two sentences share the same adjective (problems). Does this mean there is a comparison of the same idea because it shares the same description? That is, the speaker is equating cancer and addiction? Secondly, how would you combine the two sentences to make one sentence? Thank you. "Dan talked about Brian, who has had some [cancer] problems. I have worked tirelessly with people who have addiction problems."
@DrEnglish7866 жыл бұрын
Hi Brian, first of all, thank you for subscribing to our channel. We appreciate your support and assure you that we will keep uploading high quality episodes on English grammar. I am not sure which transcript you are referring to. We haven't used the two sentences you have cited in your query. Please keep in mind that you do not need a comma after Brian in the first sentence. As for combining the two sentences, it is not possible, because the first sentence is in the third person, and the second sentence is in the first person. Please rephrase your question, and I will do my best to give you an explanation. I think you might be referring to another video.
@brianskibo58866 жыл бұрын
@@DrEnglish786 Oh I'm sorry. Yes, it is from another video. But my main question is this: When someone speaks or writes two separate sentences and the two sentences uses the same adjective (in this case 'problems') is it safe to say that the person is equating what is being said in the two sentences? So, in this case, is the person equating cancer to addiction because each sentence contains the adjective 'problems'? Obviously, there is an element of psychology of what the person intended, but when you strictly look at the two sentences can one draw the conclusion of equation because they used the same adjective and you want to keep the flow of the sentence consistent. Such as the rules of compare and contrast. I hope that helps. And thank you for your response and videos! kzbin.info/www/bejne/rV6ZppqYd92FldU
@DrEnglish7866 жыл бұрын
Hi Brian, I am afraid I still do not understand your question. Perhaps the question is confusing because you are incorrectly labeling "problems" as an 'adjective'. Please know that the word 'problem' is a count noun, not an adjective. I am sorry I do not understand your question.
@brianskibo58866 жыл бұрын
@@DrEnglish786 Hmm. I'll try again. First, Merriam-Webster says 'problem' can be used both a noun or an adjective. But that really isn't my main concern. All I'm asking is if the two sentences are trying to compare (or equate) one another. That is, given how the two sentences are written, if the writer is comparing (or equating) cancer to drug addiction. I believe so because they used 'problems' in both sentences and because the sentences are consecutive. To me it would be illogical (and perhaps ungrammatical) to deny that because that would mean 'problems' would take on different meanings in consecutive sentences and it seems innately that the writer is trying to show a relationship between cancer and addiction. So, again, I'm just asking if, given the sentence construction, is the writer comparing and equating cancer to addiction by showing a relationship between the two sentences. I hope that is more clear.
@DrEnglish7866 жыл бұрын
'Problem' can be an adjective if it modifies a noun, as in "She is a problem child". However, 'problem' is not an adjective in the two sentences you have quoted. To answer your question, the author is not trying to compare or equate the two instances of 'problems'. It would be semantically anomalous to compare cancer to drug addiction. To tell the truth, the two sentences do not make sense. First, why is cancer in parentheses? Second, no native speaker of English would ever say "S/he has cancer problems". That's a really awkward sentence. Most native English speakers would say, "She has cancer". If asked for the specific type of cancer, they may say, "She has blood cancer/lung cancer", but no one would say *She has cancer problems. The second sentence does not follow at all. There is a strange topical shift from the first sentence to the second sentence. I must say that it is difficult for me to comment on the two sentences without the context. I hope this helps.
