I keep coming back to this improv absolutely FLOORED by the transition from the Ab9 to Fm11 at 1:13. Absolutely brilliant rendition of a gorgeous piece ❤

Hi, this is really great stuff, how would anyone learn to transcribe chords and ear different voices so precisely, this seems so hard to me, how did you achieve this level?
@PianoDigitalScores55 минут бұрын
A lot of doing (transcribing), software to slow down the audio and a lot of plays and replays (where it wasn't clear to me) to have time to hear everything. But this is me without perfect pitch or a good ear. Others might take less time and with less effort. I'm still practicing and learning. It also helps to have a keyboard near to try to replicate the harmonies you hear and see if they match. Also, even so, I did slip some errors into the video version. I've since made edits to the PDF to be more accurate.
@ferdinandodamico579635 минут бұрын
@@PianoDigitalScores Thanks a lot, are there some easier compings to transcribe that you started with and can recommend me to try? I don't think there are many people that could do much better than you here, there is always room for improvement but your level is a goal for me right now. Relative pitch is a slow process and a long journey but I don't think that having perfect pitch would be way better, surely you wouldn't have to ear train this much, but I have friends who have perfect pitch and are not that good at hearing inner voices (because they never train) or just don't have the patience to transcribe long solos or compings.

Not convinced, personally... Marian's fast, and the two-hand runs are spectacular, but for all the fireworks he's not shifting between stylings nor allowing for breathing-space simplicity. I'm not saying I could do better, but Oscar certainly could!

You can only do an accompaniment like this if the singer is very skilled like Mel here. Many singers who aren't that good, the pianist has to bang out the melody throughout the song.
@dizeng608514 күн бұрын
He’s singing in 6/8 compound meters, not 4/4, hens you have too many triplets
@PianoDigitalScores14 күн бұрын
Can you imagine how writing it in 6/8 will increase the difficulty of reading the transcription? I believe Barry is referring to a 'feel' rather than time signature.

Thank you for this transcription. You should study Barry Harris. The pianist (Jakub Hajdun) was most likely trained by him.

You're welcome! I am studying his approach but not as much as I'd wish. I don't know if Jakub was his student. In the original video, at the end, Barry asks for the name of the pianist.

If the singer is less experienced, I often simplify my playing and cue them by playing the first few notes of each phrase in unison with them to help keep them focused. This approach ensures they stay on track and find each phrase without getting lost. If I played with the same level of intricacy as in the video, an intermediate singer would likely struggle. A seasoned professional like Mel Tormé, who knows the songs inside and out, wouldn’t face this challenge.

bar 52, should that be a Dbmaj7 and not an Eb7sus? EDIT: also bar 20, instead of Fm it should be a Dbmaj7. FYI, GREAT job transcribing, I purchased a copy - thank you for making it available! I LOVE Barry's improvised chorus on this...are the lyrics improvised or are they taken from something somewhere?

Hey man! Thank you for your feedback and corrections! The one in m.20 was already fixed. I wanted to reply to you sooner but I had to finish going through the whole transcription again to check for other mistakes, which I had already started doing (took a while, I know). I've found other mistakes and fixed them and will soon be sending out a pdf update to everyone that purchased it.

My friends, this is probably the pinnacle of the art of accompaniment. I'm fascinated by such creative geniuses and how they can just excavate incredible beauty that is not static. This beauty is alive, maybe a little uncomfortable, and engages with your soul. It is one of those works I am grateful to have encountered in my lifetime! Thank you for sharing!

Indeed, Marian has mastered Oscar's style, and is essentially an Oscar clone. It's too bad he doesn't add some originality by injecting his own style into the mix.
@PianoDigitalScores25 күн бұрын
He sounds like Oscar but isn't a clone IMO. If you want to hear another side of Marian listen to AM Call.
@tomgiles148425 күн бұрын
@@PianoDigitalScores I'm very familiar with "AM Call." With the exception of the funky title cut, Petrescu's style has "Oscar" written all over it. If I didn't know the album and were to close my eyes while listening, I'd say it's Oscar. Don't get me wrong: Petrescu's immensely talented (and so are you for transcribing this!), but I wish he'd add more of his own style. If I wanted to listen to Oscar, I'd listen to Oscar (and have been for over 50 years. Even though OP has been my gold standard all those years, I also like the McCoy Tyner-inspired younger players like Eldar, Taylor Eigsti, etc. who (especially in Eldar's case with his super-fast interpretation of Oscar's version of "Sweet Georgia Brown"), can play like Oscar, but can also play outside lines as well. Oscar didn't do that, as he was mainly an inside player.
@PianoDigitalScores25 күн бұрын
@@tomgiles1484 (Thank you!) It's true that most of his recordings are laced with Oscar's style but I believe if you listen closely you'll notice where Marian puts his own fingerprint. For example, have you noticed the difference between the two when they comp? Looking at the difference between AM Call and the rest, I'd also like to listen to more of that style.

@@PianoDigitalScores before the answer, I say he is trying to put a binary subdivision into a ternary swing American feel. That is the problem (while the rest of the drum set is not). In this rendition it didn’t worked. Sorry for my bad English. More importantly: if you like you are listen, it’s ok. This is what matter.
