I really appreciated your podcast. I was just having a chat with my son on his way to summer school about his effort at practice. He was playing catcher as his coach was pitching to his teammates and he wasn’t blocking everything to catching the high balls. So I was talking to him about giving 110 or 150%!! 😮 and trying for all the balls even when there is no runner etc. Anyway my question is..what do I say to my son about effort if not saying give 100%. How would you word it so it makes sense? He is 9. Any advice would be appreciated!

You don't take it to your ear and stop. It's all one motion. You take it to your ear and snap off the throw. The circle from catching it and bringing it to your ear is more of an ellipse. If you stop at your ear, then yes, you have to reset the motion.

That's not why we yelled it as middle infield...we yelled it so the base we were throwing it to knew where to expect the ball because they couldn't see us through the runner. The same with out catcher when he would throw to first as well.

When should the pitcher back up home?
@meachrm
@meachrm Жыл бұрын
They should back up on any ball hit to the outfield where a throw will go to home to stop a runner from scoring. Worse thing a pitcher can do is stay near the mound

This is wholly and factually incorrect. According to stats, 89% of Pitchers toe the rubber on their GLOVE side. The other 11% are sub, side, or slightly above sidearm throwers. Mechanically speaking, Pitchers are taught the physics of straight line motion so it would make sense to not teach them to throw across their body. Not to mention the inherent dangers associated with this bad mechanic (scapula separation and micro tears, shoulder tears for harder throwers, over pronation, loss of Velo, etc.). Please remove this video off of KZbin since it is incredibly wrong from start to finish.

How do you drive off the mound without bending your leg.
@meachrm
@meachrm Жыл бұрын
Pitchers do bend both legs to drive downhill. They just don’t typically bend them both at the same time. Front knee bends on the way up and back while the back knee bends slightly on the drive down and forward

I had never heard the concept of taking a step back on a fly ball until recently. Seems like one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard. I suppose as a remedy to a kid who always comes in and then has the ball go over his head, it might be ok. But then that's a sign of a bad outfielder. Better option is to move the player back in farther in the first place

Great vid! what the 🤬 is the algorithm doing such that it only has 7 comments, 250+ lines, and 5k views after 7 years? I especially loved the "let them think for them themselves, but don't rip them for going out and making mistakes in the process." that's not just great coaching, but parenting, teaching, mentoring, etc.

Any tips for coaching young kids who are not staying on top of the ball? I noticed a few kids on my team are not doing this, and their throws are weak and come out with barrel roll spin.

Some of the comment are interesting cause my son throws with what I refer to as a floppy wrist. I have always view it as a negative because more time than not when he throw from distance or even pitches his balls seems to have an arch to it instead of straight line velocity. I've been looking for drills that would stiffen his wrist up. This video however tells me something totally different

I agree except for one thing getting inside the baseball with your hands that is true also BUT if you use that down on the ball move your arms can get stuck most people all the way to the big leagues preach this Mike Trout does also and he uses an exaggerated pull down to be inside the baseball but when he is going good he does not due what he preachers ok the first move I truly believe is down are but forget the plane of the ball and instead think of going through the path of the ball with a paddle on the sweet part of the bat ok it is a Nike swish on a tilted plane and if the hitter makes a slight move down into the ideal bat plane on an ideal pitch he will then go sightly up with the paddle fully exposed long in the zone ok the swing has these planes as in golf but different you work off going through the hitting zone work backwards and forwards from that ok but why not hit down and then thru true But getting into the position to get the bat thru there is like pulling a rope rope over your shoulder look at great and great hitters they are moving into a position to go up the line it is an oval not a circle the down movement you are sowing is too cramped good hitters get into a position to hit and it has a flow to it not cramped up

😂😂😂😂 people saying he is wrong have had coaches in their ear trying to adjust mechanics. Throw the way you learned from the start. That’s your motion. Yes you can make some adjustments but if it’s in your natural motion then do it! He is correct about the elbow and the shoulder. The bicep is also another affected muscle. However I’m not an advocate of hooking the ball. But whatever works
