My 3rd favorite planet destruction in cinema, for how quick and sudden it is. A terrible, ghastly silence indeed. Second is Unicron eating Lithone in the ‘86 Transformers movie, for how we get a worm’s-eye view of it all happening. First is Earth destroyed in Titan A.E., for the process showing city lights going out (every light extinguished is millions of people dying, and there’s thousands of them) and for pieces of the Earth hitting and destroying the Moon, which really drove home the idea of the Drej leaving us with nothing.

The scary thing is that this could possibly really happen. Like, if aliens were real then they could very possibly have the types of weapons to act something like this. We would be COOKED. No chance at all of escaping. And then poof, we’d be gone… no sympathy from the aliens at all… everything we know and love would be gone. I truly could not believe how bad this movie was, given that it is based on superlative source material, and some very talented individuals worked on it. But it really was an excessive lesson in how to make a pig's ear out of a silk purse. BTW, I own a copy of it, and I've given it multiple chances - it's just an appalling disaster. If you want video, the BBC TV version is ten times better, although the special effects are rubbish. Or just go back to the original radio version - infinitely better than this failed movie.

As someone who's read the books and watched the original BBC tv series, I theorise this movie remake was intentionally made to be as bad as possible. FFS, there's even a scene that's not in the books...and the director claimed to be a fan.

My dad was in his 40s when this was on theatre's, and i was only a teen. When this theme started playing, I remember he looked at my brother and I like he was another kid with excitement, "Oooooh, ooooh, this is it!" It wasn't until later that we found out he read the books and watched the shows. I miss that old man.
