You can force a temperate fruit tree to fruit even in a lowland tropical climate. You spray the tree with a hormone that's responsible for making trees drop their leaves. This technique is called artificial defoliation and this causes the tree to flower after a short dormant period. Even removing all the leaves of a tree manually creates the same effect although this is extremely laborious. The greatest limiting factor to temperate fruit cultivation in the tropics is the extreme rainfall patterns, clayey lateritic soils being quite infertile in the subsoil layers and poor in drainage, and of course, sunscald. Worst thing ever in my opinion. So far this has worked on apples grown from seeds. The other temperate fruits are quite finicky but some brave souls should make it possible.

Right on. I have family that has moved to Kauai and the Big Island both have been living on the islands for over 10 years. I love visiting, but feel so bad for the people of Hawaii. My family works hard and does gives great care for the land. But I will only visit. I can’t morally move to the island. Because I would be taking from the people. Mexico is closer to Oregon and has great weather and a lot cheaper.

okay.. so... i'm all for composting human poop. your poop. for a while now iv been questioning this thing about not using human poop and leaving our poop above ground etc. like any other animal that poops above ground, the elements of the sun steralise and it all gets broken down and composted anyway. nothing wrong with it. on another note, im not a fan of using commercial products to do somehting that nature already does. so imma gonna say no to the rooting hormone powder.

Start with leaf beaters on your down spouts. Seal your cover with the same kind of cable they used to hold the liner in place( green plastic coated wire) and fill any gaps around the inflow and overflow pipes with expanding foam. Now you have a nice sealed system that won't allow too much to get in to start with. I put a Y connector on one of my downspout with a screw in cap so I can add bleach without going out and pulling the cover off the tank. Every year or so , just vacuum the bottom using a 25' pool hose and siphon method.

Where can we get listing of land in fern acres/big island for offgrid except MLS?
@southwesttransport475312 күн бұрын
Don’t add bleach or baking soda in the amounts given. Your example of 3000 gal/ 10 cups is 1 cup/300 gals. 1/2 cup for every 10 gallons in a 3000 gallon tank would be 150 cups of baking soda. But, a tablespoon / 10 gallons would yield closer to 10 cups in 3000 gallons. It would actually be just over twelve cups.

Couple of things I might include; check your catchment surface (I.e roof gutters, general condition, debris, bird or fruit bat droppings, excessive vegetation build up, dust or ash) Where I live that plastic tarp cover you have would only be suitable for non potable water supplies for many reasons primarily it won’t effectively keep out visitors mosquitoes, possums, rats, snakes, or frogs ..... if we were to use that type of cover in the drier periods we would definitely find snakes and frogs residing in the tank ...... the other place these animals typically like to hang out are septics or sewage systems ...... and potentially travel between the two. Faecal contamination is definitely something I try to avoid in my potable water supply.
@HomesteadinHawaii12 күн бұрын
We don't have those animals here in Hawaii. Most of us actually use those tarp covers over our tanks and still drink the water, with proper filters of course. I was going to bring up the roof, but I thought, I would just stick with the tank stuff in this video, but I shouldve included the roof, you're right

Do you depend solely on rainwater? When I started building I was thinking about relying on rain water. Not much later we had a 30-meter-deep well installed that has never let us down, while the rain lets us down regularly. The promised communal water supply that was said to be ready eight years ago is still going to be rolled out.

Wells in Hawaii are not really an option for individual homes. The rock is porous, so water table is at sea level. Wells can be 1000’ deep or more!
@HomesteadinHawaii12 күн бұрын
It rains so much here that it is OK to rely on a water tank for all of our water needs. My tank has never run dry, but other people have to order in water from water trucks from tie to time because they don't know how to conserve. There are some wells around here, but they tend to be contaminated with fecal matter from all of the cesspools upstream

You don’t KNOW Eden Roc. Please go up and actually talk to some long time residents. There are great people that have been up there for 30 years. I’ve been up there for 17 years and have great neighbors. Yes, there are issues, but they are the very same issues you find all over the island.

I am a new weary resident because of negative comments like you see here, but came to realize quickly there's no truth to any of it. I spoke to everyone I came across there and everyone has the Aloha spirit. During the recent flooding there, 2 big trucks were helping my son detour and got safely to the other side. That's my experience so far. Loving it so much that I bought 2 more lots.
