This was a great video! I've been making an oiran D&D character so have basically been trying to soak up as much information as I can about oiran, how they look, and what their lives were like. A good book about the subject is "yoshiwara: the glittering world of the japanese courtesan". Technically, the term oiran only came into common use around the 1750s. Prior to the 1750's, the highest rank of courtesan was the tayuu, and beneath them the koshi. After that, the highest 3 ranks yobidashi chuusan, chuusan, and the tsukemawashi were known as oiran. At least, this was the case within the Yoshiwara district. Kyoto and Osaka continued to use the term Tayuu to refer to the higher ranks. I find the whole thing so interesting to read about, I really recommend the book if you are interested in the details surrounding oiran/tayuu and their lives! The Yoshiwara district is my roman empire lmao.

I’ve recently taken an interest in kimono and kitsuke after playing “Rise of the Ronin” on PlayStation. It rekindled my passion for Japan. It’s a whole world in itself, so very fascinating. I just ordered a whole bunch of stuff, can’t wait to dive in. Thanks for sharing!

I know this video is quite old but it makes me so happy to see people learn about kimono through cosplay, it's how i originally got into learning about kimono. Idk why but it feels really special to talk about something so niche, most anime fans have a general idea of what a kimono is but not many know about all the different types and styles and all the small and intricate details. I love this video!!

Thank you for this great video. I’ve done oiran and tayuu dress up in Japan. In Japanese theater and dance, they use fake layers to keep it lighter. Modern day Tayuu have to bear 20-40 kilos of kimono. I’ve actually sewn a lot of fake layers because Japan is getting hotter and hotter every year. You can see the kitsuke get super light with fake sleeves because no one wants heat stroke.

Your hair looks wonderful in this video! I'm watching through the series now, lovely to be in the future and know you pull through to make a fantastic costume. Sewing and perfectionism is hard! "fold back half an inch" when it's on a seam is going to be like the seam allowance if it was stitched, it would match up with the part that was sewn. However, if you fold back half an inch on a slit cut in the fabric you're making a one inch gap that doesn't line up because there's no seam allowance adjacent to it.

Aww! How cute! 😄 You make such an adorable rabbit! You look great! The end picture is flawless, as is your white makeup. Great job! I am a volunteer clown and I actually use that same stuff too! (The Ben Nye Super White Face Powder) It’s my go-to. The Mehron Clown White really gives me a very opaque and pigmented white base, and the powder makes it extra white and bright. 😊🤡
@akaanika
@akaanika 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! I think thats quite a compliment to get from someone who does clowning. I’ve tried regular mehron clown white too and it works really well but it’s just so sticky feeling to apply to the face until it warms up, so i stick to the clown lite. It also works really well when building face colors other than white too. Thanks for the kind comment ❤️
@TheJipperoni
@TheJipperoni 3 жыл бұрын
@@akaanika aww thank you! That’s so sweet of you to say! Thank you for lifting me up with that compliment as well! You are very welcome! I totally understand about the regular clown white. You’re right, it is very smooth and easy to apply but very unpleasantly sticky. It is also very thick and cakey. Pros and cons, you know. 😜 But if I can ask one enormous favor of you, since you clearly are very talented: can you please, please do a video/look of the original Pennywise from the 1990 Tim Curry movie of Stephen Kings IT? As a clown, that would be so cool and interesting to see! Like, the whole complete look just like the miniseries, with the costume and everything? 😀
@akaanika
@akaanika 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheJipperoni Pennywise is a really popular costume for a lot of cosplayers but I’m afraid I just don’t have the time and resources to dedicate to something like that. My cosplay make schedule is usually booked out by almost a year usually and I’ve got a ton of stuff that would need my attention more.
