I don't even go back under the string. I just lock it the same directions around the machine and I have never lost tune. Ever. 2-3 wraps. Nothing more. That's it. I also break the string off. Zero tools.

I was fortunate enough to watch Rene' do this on Stevie's guitars......live and in person in front of me !! But I never thought of grabbing a set of Stevie's strings he cut off when he did the change out......in retrospect.

I know about this thing called Truck Stops back then..its because them Truck Stops had women that worked there in rooms for horny men..that's right..u heard me right! And I know this is true because I lived not far from these so called Truck Stops joints and men knew where to go that were hot and needed a cooling down time..r u with me..so..Stevie Ray Vaughan knew where to go and truck stops was right where Stevie headed too on many of his trips..

People don’t seem to realize that all electric guitars in the 1950s and early ‘60s came stock with 12 or 13 gauge strings, with a WOUND G! That was standard back then. They didn’t even make 9 gauge E strings until guys like Jimmy Page were buying banjo strings for the High E and then using the standard E as their B, the B for a G, etc... and throwing away the Low E. Stevie wasn’t doing anything new, he was playing “old school” strings like his heroes used.

I don't think anyone claimed Stevie was doing something new. He was however playing a different style on those thick ass strings that they weren't playing on in the 50s.

Cool interview but I’m confused. I’m very familiar with his appearance on The Tonight Show, and I never would have known that he wasn’t playing his #1! Was the prototype relic’d? If so, they did a great job! kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5KYna2He7WesLc

I watched the video in your link and it does look like the original 'number one' he's always jammed on. However, the large SRV logo stickers he's always had aren't the ones that are on there, it's the newer looking ones that come on his signature strat . I've always wondered why his signature strat dont have his original decals and this story from Rene explain that. But as far as the guitar on the tonight show, that looks like number one with new decals. Maybe that's what Rene meant. Anyway, thanks for the link, love seeing videos of Stevie I've never seen before.

You can lock the string in a different way on a vintage tuner, a half wind, meaning first wind is around one half of the post (split post).

When not using vintage Kluson type tuners or locking tuners obviously, this is the best way to string regular tuners especially on the B and high E. It locks the string into place and doesn't allow it to slip. With the high E and depending on the gauge, they can easily slip with only 2 or 3 winds so generally you have to put several winds on it so it doesn't pull out. Not when you lock it. You can lock the high E, put 3 winds on it and you're good to go. No slipping at all. There's also a locking method for vintage Kluson style tuners as well that works great for the higher strings. Even though you're sticking the end down into the tuning key, they can still slip. So locking the strings even on Kluson style tuners works great as well.

Oh it makes me feel so good to know that I already string up the exact same way as Rene Martinez for years now. Such a pro moment for my little hobbyist ass. :) I love how most people would cut their string ends automatically, but he explains WHY it is so important to do so. Just in case. Sign of a great teacher, they cover every caveat.

if you play a lot with your nails, invest the money to go to a nail studio. The gel gets very hard and will last quite a while. Was a suggestion by a friend that plays a lot of flamenco style.

I watch this, and think "He used to change Stevie Ray Vaughn's strings, he's an expert"... but after watching SRV break strings at every concert, especially thick strings tuned down a half step, sometimes more than once and sometimes more than one at a time, I wonder if maybe Rene's been doing it wrong the whole time...

Rene's talked many times about Stevie's hard playing and how he had a tough time finding ways to avoid his strings from breaking, there's a vid where he puts some kind of plastic around the string inside the saddles and says it actually helped.

Right because it totally had nothing to do with the fact that Stevie beat and played the shit out of his guitars. Nah. Not at all. Definitely the winds around the post that broke his strings. Lol
