I agree with Elliott on taxes, prison reform, ranked choice voting, and decriminalization. But he is way off base on Medical Assisted Suicide (aka the euphemism by which its proponents call it, "Aid-in-Dying.") Talk about an "empathy gap!" Although he gives lip service to acknowledging the disability rights argument against it, he pivots right back to the sentiment that you shouldn't "deny" people the "right" despite the very real threat that normalization of this practice represents to the elderly, disabled, and poor. He doesn't seem to get that most of the very people who are demanding it are people who have always had the medical system on their side, namely, the white, well to do and non-disabled. If you are not in that category- if you have been marginalized, underserved, and even blatantly discriminated against by that system- you are going to see this for what it is: yet another existential threat, a potential death sentence. No written safeguards or restrictions can ever be put in place that can prevent or even monitor abuse and coercion- subtle or blatant- under this cost-driven system, which encourages judgements against those whose "quality of life" is viewed through the biased, distorted lenses of ableism, classism, racism, and ageism. In addition, Elliott admits that the proponents (including him) will never be satisfied with the already inadequate restrictions put into the legislation just to get it passed. Once passed, the proponents chip away at these "limitations" under the guise of making the laws more "user-friendly" - it's happening all over the country in states where this is legal. The proponents' ultimate goals are euthanasia and the broadening of the categories of patients who are qualified for MAS to include those with mental illness, dementia, and, ultimately, people whose conditions only become "terminal" when treatment is refused them or when they refuse treatment. Progressives need to see these bills for what they are- and think back to the historic eugenicist roots of this practice.
