You can attack upwards whenever you want and downwards if you jump. Attacking downwards and hitting an enemy gives you a little "hop" because of the recoil from the swing, otherwise known as a "pogo". That's why the Vengefly King took you so long to kill, you're supposed to pogo off it when it glides under you.

I learned that once I got stuck in the mushroom area and didn't realize I needed to attack downward to bounce off the mushrooms lol. That would also make sense why that boss took so long.

I've been playing the game for a while so I don't know if it's worth trying to get used to controller at this point.
