I remember someone telling me, Irish people and cars are like americans and guns. Very very difficult to persuade people to even just use them less! They react highly emotionally - and not logically - to things like cycling infrastructure. So i think trying to reason with someone logically about this is kind of pointless to an extent, so many people simply won't listen. Perhaps its time to think of ways to somehow appeal to people on an emotional level instead.

There are many strange and dangerous bits. There is a cycle path on the N2 extension near Hollywoodrath where cyclists are expected to make a 1km diversion around a roundabout. There is 1 pedestrian/bicycle bridge over the M50, N2/M2 and N3/M3, which is a big contrast to the N4 and southern M50. Rights of ways are poorly defined and less well observed. There are large no through blocks, particularly around Rosemount/Ballycoolin/Luttrelstown which mean that bikes and cars are sharing the same busy roads. Surfaces can be dreadful, the decision to plant cherry blossom means that roots are close to the surface and bike paths can be dangerously ridged. There are some very big intersections (example, anywhere around Blanch) which can be a real challenge to navigate when there are fast weaving motor vehicles. No one enforces bike lanes (gardaí say talk to the council because bike lanes have no legal status) so vehicles and contractors can block lanes with impunity.

Would make it much easier for people to get in to Dublin from Blanchardstown.

easier but they still wouldnt do it, what is it, 8km-15km? anywhere people cycle they cycle on average 3km a day. They tried it on the n11 all the way out a bike lane, and people still get a bus to ucd instead of biking, and they are young students who need the money.. to put it in perspective RTE is 1km away from UCD and Donybrook stadium is 1.5km away. 1km the other way gets you to radisson blu hotel, 1.5km gets you to the top of booterstown road... So people in Stillorgan are already put off, its 3km, 6km return, double what the dutch expect. Basically if you built all the student accomodation for ucd within 1.5km and put cycle paths to them all, the cycle paths would be jam packed.

Japan has the safest roads in the world but cyclists use the path. Difference? they cycle short distances less than 1km, in netherlands they only cycle up to 1.5km, they potter along as there is no rush. Irish people are expected to do an 8km cycle from blanch? 14km? Such big distances cause people to cycle as fast as they can, not wait at reds, etc. I have been shouted at by comuter cyclists when I cycle for holding them up. They have a 45 minute miserable cycle to and from work, they are not in the mood to potter about.

Cyclists wouldnt build it. They tried a 15km long one to shankill, no one uses it. In netherlands people cycle 3km a day on average. A commute to shankill and back on bike would be 10 times that. The canal is a longer route, plus isn’t paved between castleknock and clonsila and very narrow, it’s actually quite simple for fingal to improve the network by designing bike lanes to the canal and the phoniex park but the main problem is both of those are managed by waterways Ireland and opw who won’t work well with fingal to develop better plans.

@@timmurphy4844the deep sinking is a problem but capacity is also. The canal path is; busy at peak times, used by many delivery guys on electric bikes doing big speeds, narrow in places, and has a series of odd sections where “cyclists dismount”, or there are gates, or awkward rail crossings.

You think the roundabouts on either end of the Ongar road should be changed to hinder traffic? Are you insane? The majority of people have and will drive, why should we be prioritising 3% over 97%. People in blanch don’t like cycling, maybe it’s the weather, maybe it’s the fact that the whole place is on a hill and not worth the effort.
@brianholmes18122 ай бұрын
Or maybe they don't like to cycle because theres inadequate infrastructure, and by improving the quality of cycling infrastructure we can increase that figure, while alleviating traffic for those who prefer to drive. Every person who chooses to cycle is one less car to get stuck behind, so increasing the number of cyclists makes the lives of drivers much easier
@thomasd27962 ай бұрын
@@brianholmes1812 yes the more who cycle, the less cars. However, if you’re removing car lanes then you’re making the problem worse. I can speak for myself and those I know, I like cycling but to say the reason I don’t cycle everywhere is because the roads aren’t safe is rubbish. I need to be able to collect kids, bring stuff, go to work. It doesn’t matter how safe it is for cycling because this won’t change. @brianholmes18122 ай бұрын
@@thomasd2796 common misconception there, but expanding car lanes will create more congestion. Seems counterintuitive but car infrastructure but between inducing demand and creating additional bottlenecks, congestion tends to get worse in areas with additional lanes. On top of that, ultimately extra lanes actually add much less road capacity than a bike lane, due to the inherent space inefficiency if cars. I understand you don't seem to have a cargo bike and would prefer to drive, but even still, by inducing cycle demand we can eliminate far more congestion than an additional car lane would carry

@oliverdavies8412Ай бұрын
Hi, creator of the video here. Believe it or not, I'm actually temporarily living in Belfast at the moment. Unfortunately from my experience Belfast is fairly poor for cycling, with the city centre having a single proper cycle path to the city centre. Yes, just one half-protected cycle path starting near Botanic. There's a nice protected cycleway by the river but I wouldn't consider it city centre. Belfast city is still incredibly car-centric with wide multi-lane roads and even five lane one-way roads in the most extreme cases. Dublin city in comparison has a maximum of three lanes at a time, if you count the bus lane. And Dublin has many more cycle lanes, especially more protected ones. On the positive side Belfast has a traffic calmed inner-core, with many pedestrianised streets and bus gates, so cycling in that part is generally easy, even at rush hour. Also Belfast's much wider footpaths are great if you're not confident enough cycling on the roads. Dublin lacks both of these. It's fair to say both have room for improvement 🙂

but in the netherlands people only cycle 3km a day. Its 8km to the m50 alone, thats a 16km round trip a day, but lets go further, lets go to the edge of his circle, thats 14km from the city.. 28km a day vs 3km a day... Every single area already connected to the city does not cycle in beyond a certain limit and it goes beyond all known knowledge that they will. Shankill has a cycle path all the way to town, its 15.6km long, and no one cycles from shankill to town.

I haven't had any HUGE issues with this lock yet! kzbin.infoUgkxfyHDlEqk6hqu9acdvK5NGzZsGKSokSbv It seems sturdy and like it will get the job done. I really like that it has a twisting lock feature to keep out dirt and debris. However, the mounting system is much too light for the lock, and continues to get loose/move around. It's mostly made of plastic parts, and I've had to tighten it a few times in the past week or so that I've had it. I'm worried that it's going to break off at some point while I'm riding. I'm considering just scrapping that part, but that would mean having to carry the heavy lock i my backpack and adding more weight. I wish I could have given this more stars, but without the mounting system, it's just another heavy lock that I have to cart around. UPDATE: Increased rating to 5 stars because the seller offered to provide a new lock and mounting system. Really appreciate the attention to customer service!!

I can't ever remember actually enjoying driving a car - traffic sucks and they're fairly disconnected from the outside world! With the improvements to bike infrastructure I can even bring my kids with me on routes with protected bike infrastructure which is more fun than having them bored out of their minds in the back of the car. Turns out a bike is also a better way to commute than using my old motorbike. The motorbike was / is fun but it sucks getting struck in traffic and competing for space. I suggest any of those complaining about bikes to just give it a try. You might even like it.

Safety is one of the reasons why I rarely cycle now but a huge reason is slow to change traffic lights. Even pedestrians are going mad waiting at lights. If they change every few seconds thats good for cyclists, good for pedestrians and bad for cars. If an elderly person is crossing while the lights change others must wait. Smart lights would also help.

Nice to see someone in Ireland pointing this out. But I think there's more reason than just safety when it comes to choosing not to cycle in Ireland. Because so few people cycle, there aren't that many GOOD bikes available on the used market, meaning if people endeavor to try it out, it involves buying a decent new bike at full price (or some shite from Smyths Toys). Then there's also the issue of reputation and clout. People in Ireland love their cars. It's a status symbol, and for many is the most valuable thing they own. I moved from Co. Clare to Germany 3 years ago, and when people hear I now ride a bike instead of drive a fancy Audi like I did in Ireland, it's like they are confused and feel sorry for me. People just don't get it, in the mind of the average Irishman bikes are a toy for children and nothing more. The only way cycling is going to take off in Ireland is if the stigma were to somehow reverse, like maybe bikes became super trendy... I guess Conor McGregor would have to start riding around on a Grifter or something, then all the 'lads' would follow suit.

Before the 1970s, The Netherlands wasn't the cycling paradise we know it as today (granted it was still safer than anywhere else at the time). But it really wasn't until the 70s when the Dutch government saw too many pedestrians and cyclists being killed by cars on their roads. Their government then made a decision to legislate for bike lanes and footpaths to be wide, and protected by curbs. They were motivated by reducing fatalities - not by worrying about the status symbols of the middle class. And it has paid off beautifully imo. I visited Amsterdam for the first time this year and I've never felt so safe as a cyclist. It was like a dream. But back to Dublin. Once cycling becomes more accessible to everyone, I'm sure the bike market will naturally blossom in proportion. Not to mention that you can already buy multiple new bikes for the cost of an average car. (Also without the added cost of fuel, road tax, insurance, getting a license, etc.) If people can afford a gas guzzling car, they can afford a bike. No question. I understand cars can be useful for longer journeys sometimes, but there's really no excuse for so many cars in the city centre, this video really gets that point across too. And yes, I respect your opinion. While there does seem to be a stigma around cycling in Ireland, there won't be if it becomes the norm. Peace ✌️
