Happy holidays man! Can i ask a question? How can you have opened at the same time the rgb mixer the window and the waveform in the bottom line of davinci resolve? My screen displays only 2 tools at the same time. Also my motion effects and curves are not seperated like yours.Also your videos are very helpfull while i am reading the book! Thanks alot ! Also ive noticed a small contrast shift on your recordings compared to the first videos.

I dunno man, at 3:45 it looks better before. The way you've truncated the dynamic range with the curves just makes it look flat, and you've lost shadow detail and depth.

Very well summarised, the trick about the composite mode is priceless. I have one question, how does the custom curve affect the saturation?
@ColorGradeDigital5 ай бұрын
@@elcasanelles5806 Well it will add saturation as well, unless you ungang the channels (YRGB) and work on the luminance Y channel exclusively.

@@watzmaaname I used to adjust contrast without setting a middle gray point as well. My suggestion is to set it if you don’t want to bias your contrast on grades up and down. Personally I do set the point on all my grades.

18% middle gray is different from 18% ire. 18% middle gray will be different depending on the camera but is usually somewhere between 35 and 50 IRE
@ColorGradeDigital5 ай бұрын
@@Jeff_Lathrop Since we are working on DWG we are setting middle gray on that working space. Of course ACES will have a different point. As for on camera middle gray yes they vary depending on camera manufactures.

@ColorGradeDigital another benefit of working in DaVinci wide gamut on multi cam is that unified middle grey point. Nice!
@ColorGradeDigital5 ай бұрын
@@Jeff_Lathrop Totally agree! DWG is truly amazing. I only wish it was more integrated with VFX. It seems to me that ACES is for the most part the industry standard when sending things out for VFX.

How do you find the 18% middle gray on the tone curves?
@Jeff_Lathrop5 ай бұрын
You have to know what it is for the camera the footage was shot on, you can look it up. 18% middle gray should fall somewhere between 35 and 50 ire

You are an awful teacher. Your mount and your brain don't seem to be able to keep up with each other, you aren't clear about which node you are talking about when you have multiple nodes, you don't show the results of the changes you are making and you have your nodes so close together that no one can tell what you have connected. First 5 minutes of the video are wasted time and the rest is mostly "uuuuh" and "Mkay?".

It may be obvious but it took me a few tries to figure out how to adjust scroll speed. Just go back to the 2nd keyframe (frame 2) and increase the absolute value to speed it up or decrease it to slow it down. This tut has been very helpful several times so thank you for making it. It would be cool if you'd add chapter markers but it's still good.

This is incredible. Have been binge-watching your videos and learning so much. Quick question - Why is it that in the shadow part of the curve, decreasing the curve increases saturation, but in the highlights increasing the curve increases saturation? Thanks in advance!
@ericdargan9 ай бұрын
A follow up question would be, how would you say this sizes up against subtractive saturation using HSV?
@ColorGradeDigital9 ай бұрын
I’m really glad the videos are helpful! As for the first question goes, that is a very good note as I did notice that behavior also. I think that is because of how this composite mode operates under the node. Will do some research and find out why that is.
@ColorGradeDigital9 ай бұрын
Really great questions Eric. I’ve been working with subtractive HSV for a while now and I find it optimal for the kind of work I do. I discovered this technique very recently and I haven’t fully adopted it in my professional practice yet. I would def say that if you are a curves type of colorist this is a great replacement and has enormous upsides. For me personally I work with the advanced and mini panels so I do prefer to work with my wheels. I think it really depends on the way you like to work. Hope this helps.
