Spinal stenosis means that some nerve is squeezed by coloumn structural deformity, usually developed along years by many possible reasons. However, vertebrae bones are not fracrured at all. Kyphoplasty is a low invasive surgery procedure that is able to "open" the fracture with a little inflatable baloon (or a little "crick") giving to the vertebral body the closest form than it previous had as possible and fixing its fracture at the same time using a particular resin (a.k.a. "cement"). There are many advantages thanks this procedure: - vertebral body regain a very close previous injury form that it would not gain ever by itself; - fracture cannot get worse during classical conservative recovery process (3-6 month usually) because it is just fixed after 2 hours that resin was been applied; - recovery time is usually shorted to 2 weeks than 3-6 month Kyphoplasty should not be confused with vertebroplasty that just provide resin application only, so allowing faster recovery and no more damages, bur not the previous vertebral body form. However, kyphoplasty should done very soon after the injury, in order to avoid critical side effect: an initial calcification makes vertebral body tough, so the "opening phase" may cause its whole rupture that woukd need two discs removal and 3 vertebrae fusion (upper, lower and the targeted one). So, no more than one week after injury for the young people, more time for others according to their own situation (ostheoporosis should be take onto account paramount). For spinal stenosis laminectomy is usually indicated if it is the case, but you should ask to a good vertebral surgeon about it sure, who evaluate your MRI and other exams.
