Nerd!! I feel slack taking 3 days to notice a new upload. I'm proud of you and you inspire me! And I know you are a boss at advocating for yourself, but I'm always here if you need a break from doing it for yourself. Whether you need butterflies and scowls or to turn up at a hospital and shout at someone (I have practice at doing this). 2024 is going to be a year of tattoos for me too!!

@DanceGeek just to introduce myself: I'm an almost 60year old who rediscovered ballet about 20 years ago. I spent much of our lovely lockdowns here in Melbourne learning and practising the syllabus for a Grade 4 RAD exam in my living room. (The mantle piece made a good barre.) Hoping my teacher will agree to me starting grade 5 or 6 this year because I like a bit of a challenge. I also sew (when I'm not sewing, my family wants to know if I'm sick) and have just made an Edwardian Queen of Hearts themed dress to wear to see Alice in March.

How exciting!!! Biggest tip I have for classical performance is PORT DE BRAS!!!! Use those upper back muscles to pull the shoulders down and give more strength and control to your arms. And always connect your head and eyeline to your arms/fingers. Both these tips are easy to apply quickly and will result in such a beautiful & confident performance. All the best for your performance!!!!!!!

I can SO relate with this series! I’m in the UK and just want to be able to get pretty dancewear in a size that will fit! I’m tall, overweight and have a long torso so it’s literally IMPOSSIBLE. All these pretty leotards come up on my timeline and I click on them in hope that I might actually find one in a large enough size but no, it never happens 😢 The only leotards that stand a chance of fitting (and even they generally aren’t big enough) are the most boring possible leotards and always in black! At this point I don’t even care if my bra shows, I don’t need the pretty lace etc (though it would be nice), I just want a nice colour for once! And don’t get me started on the wrap skirts that don’t wrap and aren’t even long enough to cover my bum!! THANK YOU for making me laugh and raising awareness that not all dancers are teeny weeny! These companies are missing such a huge gap in the market and they’re clearly blind! It’s fantastic that things are gradually changing for skin colour, I hope they follow with more realistic sizing soon!

I'm so glad you're loving the series! I have a super long torso too! Even when I was a teeny dancer I struggled to find leotards that fit! Now that I've plumped up it's damn near impossible! I'm hoping to get as many views as possible on these videos to show dance wear companies that we WANT diversity!

And this is why I started making my own dance wear. I'm happy that I'm now under 95kg most of the time. When I started dancing (maybe a dozen years ago, or a bit more) I was close to 110kg. I hated going to try on leotards when the salesgirls would try to convince me that the leotards looked good but in the mirror I saw a snag about to explode in the Bunnings carpark. And then there was the time I needed fishnet tights for a performance and the only place I could buy a pair that fit was at SexyLand - I think they were marketed to drag queens.

Responding to them as you have was an incredibly intelligent, and amazing way to stand up for yourself; and others. If there is an easy way and a hard way and they both lead to the same results, the smart thing to do would be to take the easy way. If you are climbing a hill and the goal is getting to the top and your options are either the stairs or some rock climbing equipment and a sheer cliff face, it's not cheating to take the stairs, it's really just taking the most reasonable option.

My diet advice is essentially what you are doing. Don't ever take any notice of unsolicited diet advice. And only ever ask for diet advice from someone with medical expertise. But also coffee may not solve anything but it sure as hell helps. That being said, thinking of surgery, cosmetic or otherwise, as 'cheating' is only based on some made up rules in your head. I have been getting my mind around it recently, different kind of surgery, but similarly there was this thought it my mind that surgery would be the easy way out, would be cheating, was wrong. But I think I have come to the decision that sometimes the results are more important than the struggle, and I am coming to believe that surgery isn't easy, even if it may be easier than the alternative. But the idea that we have to struggle or suffer a certain amount in order to properly deserve the outcome is pretty ridiculous. Weirdly though, I always felt completely unable to face the struggle of getting to my goal without surgery, even though I was refusing to consider surgery, but now that I am seriously considering surgery, I kind of feel more like I might be able to get there without. And whether or not I do is yet to be seen, but removing the idea that I had to struggle to deserve the outcome has made the whole journey a bit more manageable. Anyway, enough about my experiences, my fingers and toes and everything else is crossed for you. I hope it all goes amazingly and you get everything you could want and hopefully more tomorrow. And don't forget the coffee, that is an important part of any diet!
@DanceGeek
@DanceGeek 2 жыл бұрын
"the results are more important than the struggle" THIS!!!! I feel like diet culture sells us the struggle because we literally BUY the diet ie the struggle. Diet culture keeps us struggling so we're never happy with the results! GGAAAAAAAHHHHHHH CAPITALISM makes me so angry!!!! But you my dar Maggie, make me so happy. And so does coffee! xoxo
