As a retired BBC broadcast engineer I can confirm that Ally-Pally 45/41.5 MHz signals were received in many parts of the world, although rarely received as images! The sound on 41.5 MHz was AM, so easily detectable. In the New York case, I'm surprised anyone had the equipment to display a 405-line 50 fps image. The signals will almost certainly have been via the F-layer and not tropospheric ducting over such a distance. Ducting long distances at these frequencies is very rare, but F-layer propagation (possibly assisted by some Sporadic-E) is not that rare, and I notice it was around the peak of solar cycle 17 where high F2 critical frequencies most often occur - like right now! I wonder if any ionosondes of the day are still available so we can assess the likelihood of it being via the F2 layer?

I got the 500, but 300 has everything that 500 has in terms of capability. Mine goes on a desk not in a car especially, so not much use of the detachable head unit. I could have saved that money for better coax or antenna!

When I got my technician license, I went to HRO to purchase a radio. I sat and stared at the FTM-500 and the FTM-300 flipping a coin. I finally decided to get the 300 and put the price difference into an antenna and mount for my car. I still cast longing eyes at the 500, but I think I made the right move.

Fascinating video. Sadly, progress? seems to make these types of places less important when it is actually a very interesting part of radio history. I was lucky to have a personal tour years ago and see it closer to its glory days. By the way, you misspell Cincinnati in your opening. Seems like non-locals always mess up the spelling! 😃

It will become an attractive nuisance until some stupid kid falls while trying to tag it. After that, the lawyers will see it scrapped. I just retired after 50 years as a Broadcast Engineer. I got a personal tour of the site nearly 30 years ago. Please tell me that the 500kW RCA transmitter was somehow spared for future preservation, it was a marvel of its time. Scrapping it would be akin to scrapping the Statue of Liberty for its copper. The whole site should have been added to the Register of Historic Places.

Having read Martin's letter, I believe what he said was NOT that MFJ was closing down rather than MFJ manufacturing was closing. As far as I read it, MFJ can continue on as a retail organisation. At least for the time being.

DD5LP - I spoke to a guy at Ham Radio Outlet who told me they are rapidly selling out of all MFJ products. So while MFJ may still be around for warrantee work, it will be less than one year before even that part of MFJ will also close down.

I used to do DX tv in the old analog days in UK. My best was a fully locked Color Picture and Sound from Kiel on VHF, the transmitter was over 500 miles away. Quite a few very noisy signals over that but I could not believe it was coming in like a local station. Yep it was fun.Of course there were reports until the 1980's of dx tv across the Atlantic but Digital put an end to it all. @@KD2REU

Ally Pally had vision on 45 Mc/s I believe, and sound on 41 or thereabouts. The thing that bugs me is that the UK standard was 405 lines- I’m not aware of that standard being used in the US at any time, yet the frame lock is working fine. Assuming the footage is genuine, i would suggest that it was a deliberate attempt to pick up the London signal, and someone had built a very sensitive receiver and aerial to do so. Although that in itself would have been extraordinarily difficult at those frequencies with the technology of the time. AP’s range was not great- it didn’t even cover all of Britain at the time.

The degradation in signal was noticeable in the Columbus area back in the fall of 2022, although not enough to make 700 unlistenable. Just interference during the day where you previously wouldn't have heard it, and then cancellation at night across the northeastern half of the metro. I haven't noticed it nearly as much in the past year, though. I got to see all the construction myself when I was in Mason for work in October 2022, and that part is sad. I wish the Big One would just be left as is!

There was a recurring example of atmospheric ducting that had happened repeatedly over many years between one of the TV stations in Hawaii and a particular section of the California coast near Santa Barbara. Living in Sacramento I have had a couple times where a TV station in Southern California would be strong enough that it overpowered the local.

I'd say this was around 45 MHz to 60 MHz which was and still is considered VHF. Our old b&w t.v. operated around these frequencies with dipole aerials to match. I'm not sure exactly which frequency our area was.

Depending on the time of year and the transmission frequency, Tropospheric ducting can bring in signals from thousands of miles away. I had a similar issue that rendered my RCC channel useless for radiotelephone comms. Grrrrrrrr.

Back in the 80s, I was getting ready for work and had the local Baltimore TV morning drive guys on with Don Scott and Marty Bass. This one morning was different though because the voice track was replaced by a station in New England somewhere and vice versa. Lasted maybe 30 minutes or so at around 5:45 AM. This was some long haul FM skip.

I’ve been a TVDXer since around 1980 and often saw Sporadic E from several Australian states plus New Zealand. Both Sporadic E and Tropospheric reception are often quite clear. SpE can fade rapidly or can be quite stable. Tropospheric is usually stable with minimal fading. Slowly fading in and out at the beginning and end of the opening. F2 is very unstable with erratic fading and often scrambled image with multiple images. The recording of BBC shows typical F2 ionospheric propagation rather than tropo. Also, this video doesn’t explain ionospheric propagation which is due to the buildup of electrical charges caused by radiation from the sun energising the E and F2 layers.

I was expecting the worst...but no! They did the RIGHT thing here! The two remaining Blaw-Knox towers, here at WLW and at WSM in Nashville, are true masterpieces of antenna design. There's some sort of mojo going on with them (I suspect that the center guying has a lot to do with it) that makes their signals pop like crazy out of the usual AM Radio Band static and crud. I don't know of any other transmitter sites that can slam a solid signal across thousands of miles like those two...and those big ol' diamonds do it like nobody's business. This solution is simply brilliant. It opens up the site to people who might never have had a chance to see it up close. I only wish that VOA hadn't yanked all of their curtains and such down, as they were equally fascinating. 73!
