It's great to hear your thoughts on hickory golf. I play either hickory or classic golf 2-3 times a week and find it more fun, interesting than modern golf. Where abouts are you based? I'm in Essex and always up for a round with another hickory player ⛳️

Agree with all your thoughts on this! For me, and this is a good thing, hickory golf ups the 'pastime' and reduces 'performance' elements of the game. It's great!

What about ' new' hickories? Can I use them in hickory comps?

What's the history of the sand wedge?

In a word, "interesting"! There is the well-known story, but there were definitely lofted clubs with flanges well before that time. Sorry, but don't know enough about these later clubs! I do know there is probably a book here, maybe volume two after the first book on the history of bunkers. Footprints, animal tracks, cartwheels, might have been better off with an old niblick from those sort of lies.

What are the best balls to use with hickories?

Hi Will. I think low compression is best, Wilson and Callaway have 60 compressions and lower! Feel is great and also think higher compression balls would, given time, start caving in the faces of woods. Even with an insert, don't think later persimmons could survive Pro V1s with a bit of anger.

Playing the heathland courses with hickory would be great fun. I have played Woking and West Hill, both of which would be tremendous with hickory clubs. I also love playing the 1950s-70s era persimmon woods and blades. Those courses would be great with those clubs too.

Nice! Yes, definitely courses designed for the running game. Have a bunch of that era clubs as well. Will get on to those soon!
