My words of advice if immerse yourself in the culture! Go to the festivals at the shrines and temples, spend a night or two out waiting for the morning train, meet some locals and do karaoke, and just be open to new things and good food!

1:59 "I couldn't stop comparing it to Kyoto." I relate to this SO MUCH. I compare the US with Cape Town all the time-the people I met, interactions I had, places I visited, lessons i learnt, everything. You worded it beautifully that we keep comparing things instead of appreciating the unique things about them. Every place has something amazing to offer. Like you over-romanticised Japan, I did the same with the US. Coming from a developing country like India, I thought the US, the #1 country in the world, would be perfect. But only after coming here I realised that it's not. The New York subway smells, the ssn office is as rude to you as govt employees in India are, people aren't as welcoming as you thought they'd be, life here isn't as pretty as they show in the movies. And recently, I started to view things from a different perspective. Every country has it's pros and cons. Nothing is perfect in this world. It could never be. So, be grateful for the things we get to experience. Cuz for some, it's still a dream. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts too! Made me feel seen. I thought I'm going crazy here.
