Let’s have this right - he was only in Strangeways for around 3 weeks and he had it easy, proper easy. Got a gym orderly job almost immediately, got placed on the food servery straightaway, infact a perfectly good lad who had been doing the servery job for a while got the boot and Barton took over his job for no other reason than he was a ‘celebrity’. Higher management at Strangeways were told in no uncertain terms that he was to be ‘wrapped in cotton wool’. He got whatever was needed to keep him happy. What I love about Haglers answer was how he said he feels like he should have gotten a rematch with Leonard. He didn't say he won the fight. That's a true warrior. All he wanted was another shot to prove to the judges that he was the superior fighter. I still see that Leonard fight as a W for Hagler. Every time I watch it, outside of the first two rounds, I don't see how Leonard got the decision when it comes to clean, effective punching. Leonard could not even dent Hagler in that fight. Leonard's punches were not snappy, or clean because of ring rust, but Leonard did put on a show for the judges, and the fans, and because he was such a beloved fighter, the fact that he came out of retirement, and didn't get completely destroyed, they decided to give him the W. The way some of those rounds were scored baffles me to this day. One of Haglers punches landed was worth 2 or 3 of Leonards in that fight. Leonard did land a few good shots, but most of them were just flurries that were mostly landing on Haglers guard. Leonard would immediately flurry after being mauled on the ropes, and looking like he was about to go down. He played the game because he knew he couldn't win a straight up fight with Hagler. You could see the pain on his face at times during that fight. Hagler was a machine, and when he quit fooling around in the 3rd round, it was pretty much about survival for Leonard. Leonard looked exhausted by round 8. If that fight had either went 15 rounds, or Hagler didn't spot Leonard the first two rounds, I think he would have at least dropped Leonard, if he didn't get the KO, or TKO. Tommy Hearns also destroyed Leonard in 1989 in their second fight, but the judges somehow ruled it a draw despite Hearns knocking Leonard down twice in the fight, and winning most of the rounds. Leonard was a great great fighter, but he wasn't the better fighter in either of those fights at that time.
