My kids, both in their late 20s now, are avid fans thanks to their Grandad, now deceased. They know each episode near verbatim and played out scenes at Christmas, My daughter also acted in a play based on the original and possibly 'lost scripts'. They are exceptional possibly. But what is sad is so few of the young now appreciate or understand either the comedy or the frightening reality of the Home Guard in its day. By the way, I was not even born in the UK. Just saying.

Just watching Dad's Army again after decades, and I love it, but notice now that Mainwaring was a bully. He bullied Wilson unmercifully, and Hodges, and it's amazing that the comedy makes you overlook that, as I did.

Best comedy series ever made, imo. Unlike some series, the characters developed and all had their own back stories, weren't just caricatures of types.

We didnt need the third pair of boots for the joke, did we ? There was a double swap and wilson and pike could have had the right size?

George, Bedankt-another hilarious episode!

It was a funny, tender, and painful episode. The show was a work of fiction, but it spoke loudly to the audience anyway. Here is Captain Mianwaring, trying to compensate in his public life for the disaster he faces at home each night. In other episodes he talks to his wife Elizabeth on the phone and winces like a small boy about to be punched again by the school bully. Then late in life someone walks in who demonstrates some love, tenderness, friendship, empathy, and understanding. No wonder he said "I never begged for anything in my life, but I'm begging you not to go." For the times that existed, she showed love and courage by leaving the area. I always hoped George would outlive Elizabeth, and he and Fiona could be together again. Such pain for both of them......

Very sporting of Mr Hodges not to stump Mainwaring at 25:00

Funny how Mainwaring doesn't like Wilsons flirting but ends up sounding like him and you see the human side of Mainwaring here also.

Watched this every week in the 60/s and 70’s. Captures the essence of a culture now being discarded and dismantled by a large generation for something not so funny.

A little correction, Robert Long has not written this song, it was only John Möring and Karel Hille, for more information look at www.unitgloria.nl/eng/Lastseven-ENG.htm

Glad they lost that buck-toothed Welsh guy pretty quickly. As a 'replacement' for Walker, that just wasn't working at all.
