If you have trouble riding a solid groove without getting bored, you're not listening enough. Your job is to be part of the song, not to play over it. Also, I'll bet most people in this comment section couldn't stay with a metronome; groove, fill or otherwise. Solid time is the foremost responsibility of a drummer.
