If you are speaking against the motion, first write a debate FOR the motion, that way you can pre-empt what our opponents are going to say and your debate will demolish their content! Also, it will help you in rebuttal. ( That is a trick to be a good debater) . E.g. - 1. Parents have wisdom and experience - so they should decide- Your point will be that no doubt parents have experience and wisdom, but their experience is a generation behind. In a fast changing world, they are not tuned to the modern demands.- And IF they are abreast of the times, then I wouldn't place them in the traditional sense of parents- they could be my peer group, or friends- 2. Parents want you to be financially secure, so they are thinking of a better future for you - But what about your dreams? Your passion? Do you want to live with regrets? By the time we are at an age to make career choices, we are also matured enough to know what we desire from life. Parents are conformists and their cultural and social pressures make their choices restrictive. Everybody gets one life to live. They made their choices and lived life why musn't children decide the course of their lives? If their parents decided their path of life, does that mean that we should wait to decide our children's path of life? Parents aspirations and expectations of life may not match a chil'd- so should a child never discover his/ her own passions? Sometimes parents fulfill their own unfulfilled aspirations through their children- It puts extreme pressure on the child and may even lead to severe anxiety issues. Opponents may argue that parents are just protecting their children from hurt and failure - well life is the best training ground. Unless you experience it in success and failure, you never discover your passion. Allowing children to choose their own path will lead to self-discovery and accountability . They may advise, give inputs but the topic of the debate is - should they DECIDE? No. Hope it helps. All the best
