I think the most important lesson one can learn with respect to slavery in the Bible is that one person owning another person as their property is immoral, evil and cruel always! No excuses !

What do you do if your neighbor asks for money and food and favors over and over and over? I fear this is a test and saying "no" will be a sin.

Hi Chris, this is not a good explication of Romans 9. Paul is absolutely not teaching that some are chosen and some are not chosen. Just the opposite. He’s been teaching for months, years, that the good news (gospel) is that God didn’t just love the Jews as was previously taught. No, God actually loves and has chosen all men to be in his family, Jews and Gentiles. We can walk through every verse to show how what you’re teaching is veering far from Paul’s point.

Having walked that same path just weeks before you, I would add that God taught my wife and I a detachment from the things of this world and a hope for glory with Him. We have since looked at things of this world with a more eternal point of view. Losing our son also taught us that our children are a gift from God that we should not take for granted and that we may not have a tomorrow with them. This drives is more fervently in prayer for their souls and makes us grateful for every day we do have with them. Especially because medical wisdom tells us that our years with one of our daughters is limited.
