If u like u can put it in ghee for 24 hours, afterward in milk for 24 hours, and then take it out of the milk. Let the milk run off naturally... No water!! Just straight vibhutti, the rudraksha will look dusty and a bit dirty, but it is okay, leave it like this, and let it it dry maybe for about 12 hours, but not in direct sunlight. When it's dry you can take a soft cotton cloth or a soft brush (I used a clean small paintbrush made of soft synthetic hair used for painting art) now slightly start brushing on top of the vibhutti. It will start coming off in pieces because under it will still be some ghee that has mixed with it. Brush in a circular motion, but don't brush hard, if you brush hard it makes it more difficult, brush soft, and it comes off. There will be some residue of the ghee slightly on the rudraksha seed, rub it into the seed softly with your finger, it will melt on the seed and become soft, and the seed will look a little shiny because of the ghee oil. This is good, it maintains the moisture on the surface. Do not worry if there is still vibhutti in between each rudraksha, just leave it. Once you put it on your body, the heat of your body will naturally absorb a lot of it, and there will be no smell also. Remember, water is not needed at all, if you use water, you are basically washing away the moisture of the ghee and the milk that you use nourish the rudraksh. You need to think of it in the same way that the science is used on a Shiva Lingam. The Lingam is a rock essentially because it has been carved a certain way, when performing the abhishek of the Shiva lingam with six different dravyas milk, yogurt, honey, ghee, sugar, and water it is not only symbolic but also scientific in how it will maintain and nourish the rock/stone material of the Lingham itself. If you just used water on the lingham after a while it will crack or start to split, you can see this in nature in the rivers if you look at the rocks. Now this is the same with a rudraksh except because it is a seed we rather use ghee which is a very high substance in fat and will moisturize the seed for long and then we use milk, which can transport the ghee inside the rudraksh and also has a different type of fat that can condition the seed. I hope this helps in understand it a bit more.
