I have 2 415's and they are much warmer than the "crisp" 416. Don get me wrong. The 416 is a fantastic mic. The 415 ha a more vintage sound. But be aware if you get one it requires a 48PH to 12T filter.

I prefer the 4073A as it sound cleaner , more transparent with 3D effects and much natural tonal quality in overall as the 416 is slightly warmer and with a tag bit of Richer lower tone and less airy as its not so natural on the 416 in overall . Thats my hearing through a few headphones from DT770 250 OHM , Sony MDR7506 , Sennheiser HD25 Plus and ATH-M50x using my Studio Headphone Amplification by Grace after half an hour of listening back and forth ............I have both Mics but prefer the 4073A on field recording , birds call , nature or Studio recording ... I’ve listened to both versions of Stephen King’s The Stand read by Grover Gardner. He does such a superb job of reading my favorite Stephen King book. He has all the voice characterizations down perfectly. He’s such a lucky man to do what he’s so good at and obviously enjoys doing.
@strumdynasty30502 жыл бұрын
Wait, did he read the original version of the stand too?
@collegeman19882 жыл бұрын
@@strumdynasty3050 Yes, Grover Gardner read both versions, and while I was excited as a kid on Christmas morning when I bought and immediately started reading the uncut version of The Stand over 30 years ago, I prefer the shorter version because it’s more direct and to the point. The parts that were cut from the original publication of The Stand really weren’t essential to the story.

The 416 sounds waaay better! Deeper sound and you sound more present, less tinny. Grover talked me through the almost 48 hours of The Stand. Based on just his voice alone, I bought The Last of the Doughboys and learned a lot about WWI with a familiar voice!

Hey great video! Do either of these mics have on-board +48 phantom power? It's been a while since I've seen one up close. I think we had to use the Sennheiser K6/ME66 for those applications. Paul have you ever tested the ME66?
@mrfluffybunnypants6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeffrey. They both require phantom power but don't have it onboard. I have not tried the ME66. Always wanted to!
@jeffreyjbyron6 жыл бұрын
I would love to use the AT4073A with my DSLR, but as far as I know there isn't an adapter for it like the K6, and the ME66 doesn't compare, at least in reviews and demos. So many mics to choose from. If I get one and review it I'll be sure to link back here. Thanks!

many "purists" crap on the SM7b as a VO mic but I know several people that make a great living using it for VO. Nobody questions their quality. It's forgiving, priced right, and sounds great as long as you have complimentary hardware to support it.

I think the MKH416 has a better an more natural sound. I think It's smoother and cleart than the AT. I prefer the MKH 416'cause your voice is more present and clean. The At is a little dark due to some mid-low frecuencies that are boosted.

Nice shoot out! I feel like the 416 is a slightly more natural sound in this shoot out. The AT4073A is very close but seems to have a bump in some frequencies that lean towards a more nasal sound (in this sample.) I mean, it's not a huge difference but I hear it. That said, the AT4073A is a great choice at a lower price point then the 416 but for me, the 416 still holds it's position as a top choice for VO work. I'd love to have the AT for field and foley work, though.
@mrfluffybunnypants7 жыл бұрын
I agree. I actually thought the 416 would accentuate the nasal sounds based on the other reviews/shootouts I've seen. This surprised me
@mikenorgaard-voiceovermike74387 жыл бұрын
I can tell a huge difference. Both are good but I prefer the 416 hands down. The AT a more pronounced if not perhaps leaning just a bit hyped high end imo. I think that the 416 is a little darker and flatter or truer. Good shootout.
